  1. I am listening to "Batman" by Danny Elfman (Comercial Edition).
After we talked about this score yesterday I felt like listening to it.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.
  2. John Williams - Black Sunday

I love this score and it almost immediately became one of my favourites by the composer. Fiercely intelligent use of motifs, which are memorable not because of the way they are written (this score is hardly melodic and that for a reason), but because of the way they are used. A brilliant fugue (which was a bootlegged classic) and action music to cap it off. Happy to own the FSM release.

NP: Die Hard With A Vengeance - Michael Kamen

The complete 800 hour La La Land release is a bit much to take in... but there are so many highlights that it going to be fun putting together a really entertaining 50-60 minute album out of this. The bonus tracks are a wonderful discovery and some of Kamen's very best action music is in this score. Just give both parts of "The Subway" and "O, Canada" a listen! Kamen was really one of the best action composers of his time! And it's great to FINALLY have Kamen's "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" variations on CD for the very first time! Killer recording as well.

Where the fuck is Trevor Jones? Come back to scoring immediately!

He scored two episodes of a Canadian midevil mini series, "Labyrinth". Episode one aired November 30th (unless dates changed), and the next one airs next year. IMDb shows the mini series to be ongoing, so maybe there will be more episodes for him to score.

NP: The Dark Knight - Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard

I must be ill. tongue biggrin

Seriously, I really do enjoy this score - A LOT actually - and for some reason I needed to play this score now! Zimmer created one of the most inspired character themes of all time for The Joker while Howard added warmth to the chaos with his beautiful theme for Harvey Dent. The best film in the series got the best score!

    Great!

Should I dare to hope for a release?
  4. Canadian re-use fees? Probably not. :-(

Just have to wait for him to load samples to his site.

  5. In the mail to day:
"Enemy Mine" The Deluxe Edition (Maurice Jarre), VS
This replaces one of the oldest CDs in my collection. I just have to figure out how to bring the cues into chronological order.

    Also in the mail:
"The Boy Who Could Fly" Varese Encore (Bruce Broughton), VS

I probably have two collector's items on my hand here.

    Cheers!

When you work out a decent order, please let me know. I reacted with horror when I saw how the thing's been put together and consequently haven't listened to it yet.

A little Christmas cheer for me today. First up was David Newman's brilliant album featuring re-recorded suites from three holiday classics; It's a Wonderful Life (Tiomkin), A Christmas Carol (Addinsell) and Miracle on 34th Street (Mockridge) This album was to be the first in a series of recordings produced by Newman with the Sundance Insitute and Telarc Records but sadly no new albums were commissioned. Too bad really because this is a fantastic album with brilliant sonics and superb performances by the Royal Philharmonic.

Currently, I'm spinning Bruce Broughton's festive score to Eloise at Christmastime, which was released on Intrada Records a few years ago.

I wonder what I should play next?

This sounds really nice. Forgive the question but has this album been featured on any Cinematic Sounds shows?

I fail to see the wisdom in this, too. Maybe I'll try to contact VS. The cue names alone don't help and sadly it has been a very long while since I've seen the film. I wasn't able to locate a playlist on the web, too.

  9. Finished CD 1 of the Ron Jones ST:TNG box compilation.

Half the cues are edits, and four edited suites, and it is all arranged into a listening experience. Looks like it will take two more CD's before I'm done with the Jones box compilations.

NP: The Hobbit - Howard Shore
First listen, only disc 1 for now. Only on the first track. I don't care how meandering it is, I'm just glad to be listening to a new Middle Earth score for the first time in 9 years! beer to Howard Shore and his wonderful sonic palette for these films.

I'm not understanding all the criticism about this score. Then again, I liked the LotR Complete albums too. This seems to be just as engaging. Sure, there are some more ambient cues, but even they are far more brain-pleasing to me than the ambient cues of most other modern film scores.

I am listening to this again and, yes it is good to get back to Middle Earth, but it difficult to remain focused on it - at least until I see the film.

The way it is presented here suggests to me an assumption that people who will listen to this are already fans: the casual interest listener isn't the primary audience. There is definitely a 'Complete Recordings' feel to this. But I still think there should have been a 'punchy' single CD version containing highlight tracks and specifically-edited tracks to showcase score and generate an even more yearning for the 2 CD set.

A Howard Shore day at work.

Been listening to THE HOBBIT and RETURN OF THE KING for half the day. The former makes much more sense after seeing the film, but it's still a lot to digest. Compared to the strong album that is ROTK, it's a not as enjoyable in the end.

Another one I listened to is COSMOPOLIS. Michael recommended it me when we met in Brussels last week. It's a very atmospheric affair, but I like it a lot. Shore teamed up with Canadian band Metric, who performed and did some of the vocals of the score. It's music that I associate with driving in a car, alone, in a big city, at night. Preferably when it rains quietly. You know that type of music? But it takes a darker turn after a few tracks and gets even quite paranoid near the end when the motif really starts to become hypnotic! It makes me think of Gabriel Yared and Underworld in Breaking and Entering.

  13. Jerry Goldsmith: "Lonely Are the Brave", 1962

There has been a VS Club edtition of this unknown but beautiful score in 2006. I own the German Dephi edition of 1995.

A minimal, melancholic western score. The main theme is a beauty! See the film with Kirk Douglas!

Awesome score, but it's recorded too low. And the end credits cue is screwed up.
