  1. Tom, I hope that you watched the restored version of Metropolis. With the original score re-recorded and the image restored, it's a revelation how the film looks/sounds.

For 1924 I really do recommend Douglas Fairbanks' The Thief Of Bagdad. Both the film and Carl Davis' new score (which I was lucky enough to see performed live against the film a few years back) are really good!

Nope Alan I saw the version with a string quartet playing. Is there a CD available with the entire Davis score?

1924 also has William Axt's score for Erich von Stroheim's classic GREED. There's also Buster Keaton's THE NAVIGATOR, which I believe got a new score a few years ago.
    I am extremely serious.

It is. One of the greatest marches ever written that's right up there with the likes of Barry Gray and John Williams.

As far as I know Davis hasn't written a score for Metropolis - many others have, with many different styles - but I haven't gotten any further than Huppertz's original, which was given the re-recording treatment by Capriccio -

  3. Giorgio Moroder version/ Hell no! wink

I saw Metropolis for the first time only a few years ago when I bought the DVD to rip the original score that had been re-recorded and was featured on the DVD.

Moroder deserves credit for doing the first major restoration of the film (he wasn't only involved in the music), although the colour tinting was weird. Granted, some of the crappy pop songs (by the likes of Bonnie Tyler) were bad, but his own instrumental is quite good. I especially love the machinistic, funky music for the factory scenes.

Sure, although I'm not sure it's your thing. It has a very 80's electropop vibe.

Sorry Alan I was confusing Metropolis with Thief of Bagdad.

  4. Here's a wiki-list on the music composed for Metropolis:

1975 – The BBC version of Metropolis features an electronic score composed by William Fitzwater and Hugh Davies
1984 – Giorgio Moroder restored and produced the 80-minute 1984 re-release, which had a pop soundtrack written by Moroder and performed by Moroder, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Jon Anderson, Adam Ant, Cycle V, Loverboy, Billy Squier, and Freddie Mercury
2000 – Jeff Mills created a techno score for Metropolis which was released as an album. He also performed the score live at public screenings of the film
2004 – Abel Korzeniowski created a score for Metropolis played live by a 90-piece orchestra and a choir of 60 voices and two soloists. The first performance took place at the Era Nowe Horyzonty Film Festival in Poland
2004 – Ronnie Cramer produced a score and effects soundtrack for Metropolis that won two Aurora awards
2005/2011 – The New Pollutants (Mister Speed and DJ Tr!p) performed Metropolis Rescore live for festivals since 2005 and are rescoring to the 2010 version of the film for premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival 2011
2010 — The Alloy Orchestra has scored four different versions of the film, most recently for the American premiere of the 2010 restoration

About 35 minutes of Korzeniowski's score is here: http://www.abelkorzeniowski.com/metropolis

Can I just say that Korzeniowski's version is my favourite next to Huppertz' original, and IMO the best score Abel has ever written!

  5. I didn't even know about this Korzeniowski work! Is it commercially available?

    BEN HUR (1925)/CARL DAVIS

Most of you probably knew what my selection was going to be. This is a powerful score that offers fanfares, romance, action, and spiritual music. Click on the link to read the review. I will go back to 1924 when I've seen the Arabian nights film.

I was under the assumption that the score would have to be composed in 1925 too? Davis fashioned a new score to BEN HUR quite recently. William Axt provided the original score.

  8. A mistaken assumption! Especially after the Bernard choice! wink

I feel that since this is my list of personal choices (How many times did Alan tell me that) I want to recognize the effort that both Bernard and Davis went to in order to make these films even more satisfying.

A nice way to keep a steady stream of traffic going there.
