My selection for 1932 isTHE MOST DANGEROUS GAME, the predecessor to King Kong by Max Steiner. Consider this wagnerian work a template for what was to come.

I've decided on 1931 but have not had the opportunity to do the review yet which I will.

  1. I bought the album that contains The Most Dangerous Game mainly for the companion score, Son of Kong.

I have listened to The Most Dangerous Game only the once and I don't expect to revisit it any time soon. Steiner's very "hot or cold" with me, and this one leaves me decidedly chilly.

Things are always worth re-visiting after a while. Tom's comments have prompted me to pull this out of the virtual shelf the next time I have access to the score.

It's a good point Alan, I really like The Son Of Kong score but I didn't pay enough attention to The Most Dangerous Game.

Both of you should revisit the film and then you can really hear the impact of the music to the film. As far as I know it is public domain material. Wagner would have approved of the effort made by Steiner.

My selection for 1930 is ALONE/SHOSTAKOVICH

    http://sdtom.wordpress.com/2010/05/11/a … stakovich/

I haven't forgotten 1931, I just need to write the review up. It is not Glass/Dracula. This soundtrack was the first sound film that Shostakovich attempted and is filled with some unusual material. Here is a recap of what we have so far.
    1922--- Nosferatu
    1923--- Nothing so far
    1924--- Nothing so far
    1925--- Ben Hur
    1926--- Nothing so far
    1927--- Wings
    1928--- Nothing so far
    1929--- New Babylon
    1930--- Alone
    1931--- City Lights
    1932--- The Most Dangerous Game

Good comeback my friend. I've written a review but I need to revise it a bit. I have an extra copy so I think a crossword puzzle is in order with a prize to the first person who can solve it. What do you think?

King Kong is done for 1933 which is one to be studied. Wagner would have been proud of Maxie

My selection for 1934 is LT. KIJE/PROKOFIEV This is a wonderful suite that has been used by many over the years.

  3. Good choice Tom. As you say, this is probably best known for the "Troika" - being a staple "library cue" for joyful travelling through snowy scenes.

I more often now listen to the version where the string melodic line heard in the "usual" version is replaced by solo male voice - whether this is the original orchestration for the film or not I cannot remember what is said in the VoxBox version (Leonard Slatkin, SLSO).

I would be interested to hear a re-recording treatment of the whole score to see how it sounds.

I can tell you Alan that he wrote it two ways. One has sax or voice. Sometimes a piano replaces the celesta or an alto sax replaces the tenor. If you care to watch the utube video of the film you can hear how much nicer the suite is. I liken this work to the Red Pony and Devil and Daniel Webster both fine suites perhaps better than the films they represent.

I can tell you that for 1935 I have a major problem choosing between two scores, something which will require some serious consideration.

I'm guessing it's between Captain Blood and Bride of Frankenstein??

  5. Probably one of those. But Steiner's She could be in the mix too?

My choice for 1935 is THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN/WAXMAN. This was a real debate for me but it is so unique it still sounds fresh nearly 80 years later that it was ultimately the only choice for me. The score is filled with leitmotifs and Universal took full advantage using them in several other pictures and serials. This was to the be the first of many award winning scores for Waxman and you'll see his name appear on the list again.

It sure is classic and one I wish Fitzpatrick or Morgan would take on as a project. You know this was a real tough one for me as its competition was Korngold and Steiner two of my favorite composers.
