You know how sometimes you "forget" how much you love something? This is one of those times, what a fabulous score, I've just started it from the begining again. love

  1. I have iTunes on random shuffling of tracks yet to be played and the shuffle has thrown up John Williams' cue, "The Olympic Spirit". An excellent piece of music.

Thirded. I love all of Williams' Olympic music.

  2. Hans Zimmer - Inception

I missed this atmospheric score smile

    yeah

The Olympic Fanfare / Los Angeles 1984 / is my favourite.

I maintain a playlist of Olympic music. David Arnold's music for London is the latest addition.

But nothing tops the Canto Olympico by Mikis Theodorakis! You have to listen to the complete work, not only the "Ode to Zeus"!
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

    Journey - Austin Wintory

There are a lot of wonderful moments in this. But at the same time, I'm struggling to connect to a large chunk of it (the big climatic cue aside). I bet it works beautifully in context but outside of it, it's just a little too subtle for my tastes.

my brother showed me the game and I greatly admired the score during it. However, I wonder if I would have loved it as much IF I heard it first outside the game

Wonderful game as well. Highly original!

I really want to play it. I tried the demo and it was very evocative. Just a little low on money right now for something that only lasts a couple of hours. wink

To the Wonder - Hanan Townshend

Definitely identifiable as a "Terrence Malick score", with echoes of Thin Red Line and Tree of Life at times. Very beautiful in parts but it's certainly not an easy listen.

How come you've got this on CD already, if you don't mind my asking? Or do you have a digital download release? I saw this one coming out in may on physical release, and within a few days on iTunes?

    The Croods - Alan Silvestri

I can't listen to this all the way through (just too bitty) but the highlights are really terrific, especially those suites at the end.

    Word! Double WORD!

I absolutely love Mikis Theodorakis Canto Olympico, boots Williams predictable ( though very good ) pieces out of sight. A fantastic album!

  4. Apollo 13 Horner

A monumentally brilliant score with incredibly emotional cues like 'The Launch', 'The Dark side of the Moon', 're-entry and splashdown' and 'End Credits'. Would love Intrada to release the promo that Horner arranged, I hate the arrangement of the album with the songs and dialogue and there's so much dialogue over music that it makes it very difficult to program them out. This is a score which deserves to stand on it's own. Funnily enough, as an occasional alternative listen, I actually quite like the dialogue included on 'Dark side of the moon' (presented clean on the OST) on the 'Ron Howard: Passions and achievements' cd, it makes for quite a poignant listen. I adore the film too.

I have the promo but the regular album is one of a very few where I do enjoy the songs and dialogue. I think it's only a matter of time before your wish comes true and the full score only album is released.

    NP: INSPECTOR GADGET (Shuky Levy)

A very rare LP transferred to CD. The music is cute enough (basically endless variations on the theme), but it's all about the nostalgia, man.
    I am extremely serious.
  6. Alexandre Desplat - The Tree of Life

This CD has joined my collection today. I have discovered it really recently and finally watching the movie (even if the score's presence in the final product is minimal) did help. Beautiful score with a great soundscape and an innocent quality.

One of my "personal scores". And quite an intellectual adventure. This marks my fourth Alexandre Desplat score on CD.

Probably the only time in history you'll see an NP of INSPECTOR GADGET followed by THE TREE OF LIFE.

  7. And this:

Ennio Morricone - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Got the expanded edition (21 tracks) today (along Tree of Life and the botched Dollars Trilogy set, which I am returning tomorrow) today and I wonder if I ever listened to the complete thing. Of course, it's not that I was oblivious of this score - I've heard Ecstasy of Gold many, many times (including a live performance conducted by Morricone himself!) and of course the Main Title is legendary.

Nothing better than some Ennio brilliance for sure cool

One of the great things about the expanded version is the extra 2'15" added to the end of the final track, "Il Triello/The Trio". Makes a great track GREAT!

NP: Oblivion - Anthony Gonzalez and Joseph Trapanese

These two composers don't offer up anything new but it's a captivating and hypnotic listen.

EDIT - "Loosing Control" could almost be a cue from Zimmer's Batman?! crazy And the ostinatos (or ostinati) are really starting to piss me off. wall

EDIT #2 - "Canyon Battle" FTW! punk

Yeah, it's a riff on TRON: LEGACY, which was a riff on INCEPTION (or whichever came first), which was a riff on the new BATMANs which were a riff on the Jason Bourne riff (which basically started the whole ostinato thingie).

Still, I like it! Very epic. And the song with Susanne Sundfør is still gorgeous!
    I am extremely serious.

Still waiting for "fishy, fishy pasta, pasta" to show up in "You Can't Save Her." And it's clear these composers love The Thin Red Line.

Defiance (Video game) - Bear McCreary

Uh, no. I appreciate that McCreary is continuing to experiment with different sounds but the heavy electronics make many of these tracks unlistenable for me. Fortunately for the traditionalists among us who like his sound, there's always Human Target.
