When I played it, I fell immediately in love with the exotic textures. I was aware of Zimmer at the time, and may in fact have owned a couple of albums (like THE ROCK and HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS), but this one connected with me on a whole other level.

    It's not only my favourite Zimmer, it's currently my 5th favourite score of all time!

    I do, actually. I had to assemble my top 10 for a recent Montages thingie, so then I got them sorted out. Of course, such a list is always dynamic so except for the first 3-4, other titles may come and go a bit.
    I am extremely serious.

    Air Force One - Jerry Goldsmith

    An exhausting listen, but a satisfying one. He was certainly the master of action music.

    I think it's one of the best action cues ever written, astonishingly cohesive given the amount of time he had to work on it.

  7. NP: JAWS - John Williams, as re-recorded by Joel McNeely & The Royal National Scottish Orchestra, Varese Sarabande, 2000.

    So, with today's mail no less then three incarnations of that score exist in my collection. I am half through the first run and must admit: This recording is outstanding all around! Great album!

    NP: WISDOM (Danny Elfman)

    One of my personal favourites and a very unique entry in his filmography. Interesting, semi-experimental synth score with elements of percussion and voices in the style of Jean Michel Jarre's ZOOLOOK. The main titles itself is to die for (no pun intended).

    NP: THE WOLFMAN (Danny Elfman)

    Wojciech Kilar channeled through Elfman. Suffering, slavic strings. It's an intense listen, but ultimately rewarding after a few listenthroughs. I prefer DARK SHADOWS over this, though, if we're keeping it to the Kilar inspiration.

    Under Fire sure is a terrific score!
    I have a friend who loves most Jerry Goldsmith music but hates the score to Under Fire!
    He just can't get into it at all. His loss in this case!

    I think there was someone on this board who didn't like it but I can't remember who? I think it's a great score but most importantly for me is that it introduced me to the exceptional American guitarist and composer Pat Metheny.

  13. Under Fire is a score that also brings memories, because I bought it in the Oxford Street HMV during my first trip to London. It's a beautiful and amazing score with the album presenting some personal memories.

    I know it as Star Wars too, and I wasn't born until a full decade after its release. (But that's mostly due to my sheer hatred of the prequels and the 'episode' bullshit.)

  21. I used to overplay "Hurricane Herman" and "Letter That Never Came" to death. Looking back, it's probably the most quintessentially Newman score ever.

    The Letter That Never Came is certainly one of the best things Newman has written. Gets me every time.

    That's very odd. Under Fire seems to be, if anything, the one Goldsmith score that non-Goldsmith fanatics often like. He's nowhere near as popular with "civilians" as people like Williams or Barry or Morricone, but play them Under Fire and it tends to be liked.

    SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER | various artists

    My first listen. I should note that I have never seen this film. Is this the one with the pottery? Because it sounds like pottery.

    It's the new expanded release from La-La Land. I don't like it very much though. Don't know what all the fuss is about. Doesn't even contain a score track by Vangelis. Odd! I'm sure it's remastered to some extent.
