    And this:

Ennio Morricone - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Got the expanded edition (21 tracks) today (along Tree of Life and the botched Dollars Trilogy set, which I am returning tomorrow) today and I wonder if I ever listened to the complete thing. Of course, it's not that I was oblivious of this score - I've heard Ecstasy of Gold many, many times (including a live performance conducted by Morricone himself!) and of course the Main Title is legendary.

Nothing better than some Ennio brilliance for sure cool

One of the great things about the expanded version is the extra 2'15" added to the end of the final track, "Il Triello/The Trio". Makes a great track GREAT!

I agree Alan, it's not often an already awesome track can be taken up a notch into the beyond awesome realm, this is one such case.

I seriously can't figure out how the dude finds the time. 8 hours of score for Defiance, 2 hours for the video game, his work on Walking Dead and I'm assuming he's already written most of the music for Da Vinci's Demons as well. Is he human?

Defiance (Video game) - Bear McCreary

Uh, no. I appreciate that McCreary is continuing to experiment with different sounds but the heavy electronics make many of these tracks unlistenable for me. Fortunately for the traditionalists among us who like his sound, there's always Human Target.

The clips for this suggest an ear-bursting experience for the whole score.

So far, that's been the experience. At least he has a consistent musical vision throughout the work. It's not to my taste but I can respect that.
  3. NP: Hart's War - Rachel Portman

I am thinking that this has not been the best choice just before bed. This score contains - for me - some of the most heartbreaking music I have ever heard. There's something about tracks such as "Final Salute" and "McNamara Trades His Life" that always affects me quite strongly.

But Portman's music in these tracks really messes me up by being both achingly sad and surprisingly uplifting - all in the space of a few seconds!

Totally agree with that - 'Final Salute' is probably my single favourite Portman cue ever. Makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck every time as the theme builds and builds in intensity.

In the House - Philippe Rombi

Not a lot to it other than the main theme but it's an addictively good one. I saw this classy Ozon film a couple of weeks back too and loved how the images and music mesh.
  4. NP: Wyatt Earp - James Newton Howard

There is 3-CD-set in the making by La-la-Land. I am not the biggest fan of these big and expensive 3-sets. Seeing that there is quite a bit of material on the regular release I opted to buy a used copy in mint condition.
A very, very fine score, indeed! Yet, I think I have made the right decision here.

Playing before that: James Last: Seine schönsten TV- und Film-Melodien (His best TV- and Film-Melodies)
Now, James Last ist a popular German band leader. Over the past decades he has composed the title themes for many tv- and game-shows. Undemanding easy listening, quite some nostalgia involved here.
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

The level of his scores has gradually fallen since the Battlestar Galactica golden era; i am beginning to loose my confident in his work. Same happened long ago with Jesper Kyd.

The film is amazing! Don't miss out! (Dans La Maison) very, very clever and effective story and the music is a very enjoyable bed for the on-screen happenings.

Yeah, it's a riff on TRON: LEGACY, which was a riff on INCEPTION (or whichever came first), which was a riff on the new BATMANs which were a riff on the Jason Bourne riff (which basically started the whole ostinato thingie).

Still, I like it! Very epic. And the song with Susanne Sundfør is still gorgeous!

Balfe with Zimmer gave birth to the sound with inception and then Daft Punk further established it with Zimmer who produced Tron, and it's become the no.1 trend since '10. Loved Oblivion, didn't mind the Zimmer references. It's very well-constructed and i can imagine it will work absolute wonders in the film.

Eh? Gradually fallen since Battlestar? False. Human Target is my count argument. So is his deeply personal work on The Walking Dead and the very enjoyable The Cape. He's on a roll and hopefully one day he get that big budget blockbuster to work on! He's an incredible and very gifted talent! I can't wait for Da Vinci's Demons!

It's enjoyable... not as a whole... but it's enjoyable. It's a step below Tron Legacy and even Tron Uprising.

I would argue that John Powell's THE BOURNE LEGACY (2002) is THE score that gave birth to the general approach of a regular beat with slight harmonic variations on top (the "Bourne riff") as used in contemporary action films. It's a historical benchmark score, just as Zimmer's 'power anthem' was in period before for the same type of film. I love The Piano Guys' version of the Bourne riff, coupled with Vivaldi:

The INCEPTION sound is very much an extension and development of what Powell established with BOURNE (only more epic and with greater interval leaps). I love the fact that there's a bit of irony there -- Powell was once a student of Zimmer and his power anthem approach, while Zimmer himself has channeled elements of Powell in the last few years.

This great stuff. Lots of familiar themes that are taking me back! Not many themes from the last 5-10 years though.

One of my alltime favourite, synth-based scores. I'm always on the lookout for more of this, but it seems hard to find.

You might enjoy an lbum by Orbital called "In Sides" (a 2CD set of instrumental works with some wordless vocals, and at least one piece that is a weird meld of two different songs).

Somebody got this for me once, but I had enjoyed the film "The Saint" and it has a remix of the theme on it.

While I don't care for the electronic pop sounds in this track, I otherwise enjoy it:
