"Everywhere" in particular is just grandiose. It basically MAKES that scene in the movie, something Goldsmith was so good at doing.

I was skipping through tracks on an Erich Kunzel CD while driving in the car with my 10 year old niece a couple of weeks back when the opening ten seconds of The Black Hole began playing, I skipped it forward as I thought my niece would be unfamiliar with it (unlike say Star Wars, Superman, Star Trek: TMP etc) when she suddenly said "that last track, take it back! That was The Black Hole!". My jaw dropped! I've never played The Black Hole (film or score) to her before so I asked how the heck she knew what it was, considering I only let the opening ten seconds play which was the mysterioso strings before the main motif comes in. She told me she watched the film at a holiday house last Christmas. I was blown away by her musical memory!
When we got home I played her the complete score. She likes it. But now she has discovered and adores Craig Safan's The Last Starfighter!
She has just started learning violin so I hope she continues in this as she certainly has an amazing musical ear!

How very very cool! cool beer <--to your niece, non-alcoholic of course wink

Lol Cheers! (with a diet soda) beer

Yeah, she's trying to teach herself Goldsmith's Star Trek theme on violin just now. Sounds um, well, cute ( to put it diplomatically) but she's kinda getting the Imperial March sounding recognisable.
I just hope she doesn't throw away her love for movie music when she becomes a teen. I noticed a One Direction poster on her wall the other day! rolleyes
Guess she's just all round musical.
And she's my latest profile picture for now till I find a good shark pic.

And a lovely pic it is too, she's a very beautiful girl, let's hope she keeps with the beautiful music. ( 1D? Awww bless! biggrin vomit )

I look forward to your next Great White profile pic cool

I just finished with a 20 minute suite of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's CAPTAIN BLOOD before heading to bed. I never really warmed up to this score but now that's I've spun this particular version again for the first time in a few years (I think I'm used to the subpar Previn/LSO recording) it really impressed me this time. The recording I spun was Marco Polo/Naxos's Brandenburg Philharmonic album with Richard Kaufman conducting. Lovely sounding album with a stunning performance of the scores outstanding love theme. Did Korngold ever write a bad film score? Hopefully Tribute Film Classics re-records the entire score for us to enjoy one day!

    Good night!

Have you heard any of his concert work? I never gravitated to the film scores but I love his early chamber music, like his Piano Trio, written at the age of 13. Dude was a monster. :|

    NP: ARGO (Alexandre Desplat)

It's growing on me a LITTLE bit. It's calm enough to sustain my current taste and some exotic flavours. But it hasn't yet won me over. Didn't like the film.

Oh, you should really have seen Zimmer play this live in Ghent two years ago, D. You would have loved every second of it.

I am sure! I absolutely adore Inception.

    The Salamander - Jerry Goldsmith

This is just brilliant. I've never seen the film or heard any of the score before - and it's a revelation, prime Goldsmith from a period he could barely do any wrong.

These comments made me listen to it again. I love it too! Dream is collapsing has got to be the coolest action track ever, only rivalled by Powell's Tangiers. And I love the way the orchestra is slowing down at 1:35. Fits brilliantly with the whole time-changing theme of the movie.

I never new about this score, did not even know Honegger has done film music. After twenty years of collecting still new discoveries!

  4. It's not exactly Christmas time but somehow I just felt like turning on my keyboard, choose bright church organ and play O You Joyfully / Oh du Fröhliche real loud. Maybe it has inspired my neighbours to buy presents in time this year.

If you play King of kings next, you will be in heaven. The trio, Ben-Hur, El Cid and King of kings are three of the greatest scores every composed. Rozsa is in a league of his own.

I couldn't agree more with you boys but I haven't played any more Rozsa today. I switched to Williams and the Star Wars sixtology. Having already played The Phantom Menace I have move to the Attack of the Clones with Across the Starts playing again and again. And of course I will continue. It's been a blissful day!

  6. Ennio Morricone - Days of Heaven

    The second CD now.

Since I own every Terrence Malick score on CD, except from the yet unavailable To the Wonder (at least here in Poland), I decided to spend this weekend listening to them in chronological sequence.

Days of Heaven I own in its FSM release. It may seem overloaded and too long, but to be honest. With such beautiful music it's hardly a problem. The themes are singular masterpieces, especially the brilliant love theme. I still haven't seen the movie. Out of Malick's career I've seen Badlands, The Thin Red Line and The Tree of Life. I have to watch Days of Heaven and The New World as soon as possible.

I'd love to delve into the philosophical motifs present in his movies. He definitely may be read in a Heideggerian vein. In this case though my philosophical readings are quite limited. I haven't gone through Heidegger's whole work, it's limited only to his Being and Time, though there are works I intend to read, like his famous essays and, after I finally read Kant, Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics. Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling was a fascinating read and I definitely should sink my teeth into Either/Or. Wittgenstein I don't know yet almost at all.
