I think some of Williams's music like that was inspired by Small in particular.

And you're right about the spotting. Again, very 70s!

I love that style of scoring. From an intellectual standpoint I think Hollywood film music was at its highest ebb in the 1960s and 70s (ironic because a lot of people dismiss it as "The Graduate era" and think it took Star Wars to set things back on an even keel).
  1. My favourite period in Hollywood history is definitely the 1970s though I wish I saw more. But I always enjoy the hell of movies like the original Pelham 1-2-3, French Connection, Three Days of The Condor and so on.

I was in a big fight on my Polish forum with a guy who said that my Harry Gregson-Williams' Deja Vu was ridiculous for its 3 stars as-heard-in-film rating, because the music means so much more than in Tora! Tora! Tora!, where it was heavily underspotted and it sucked that most of the film had no score. That said by a COMPOSER on his own!

Why did it surprise? Was it the old-school narrative style?

It looked like a Cruise vanity project. This often doesn't produce good films. (Knight and Day, Mi3, Mi2, Oblivion.)

I think part of the reason why it works is it flips a few beats that have become common in these films. They don't go looking for Jack, Jack comes looking for them. Etc. The macho, male-chauvinist, military elitist humour is politically incorrect at times, and as a result adds to the sense that they don't care what anyone thinks.

  3. NP: Romeo & Juliet (2013) - Abel Korzeniowski

Physical copy arrived today coming from the United Kingdom.

First things I hear sound very beautiful.

EDIT: It's terrific! This actually compares to the Rota score very well, not quite reaching it, but then - what does?
Bach's music is vibrant and inspired.

Also, to watch an unscored car chase... that was something.

It must be quite jarring in this day and age of noise-cranked scoring.

I'd put money on a remake of BULLIT having wall-to-wall music for the iconic car chase, most likely Brian Tyler playing with his drums miked up to 11.

Like the banter about Sandy not being scared of the sight of blood?

NP : WATERSHIP DOWN - Angela Morley

Fantastic score. A shame the film version of 'Bright Eyes' isn't on the soundtrack, IMO it's better than the more commercial sounding release.

  7. This score is on my eternal whish list!

The score Mike Batt penned inmself for the later animated series wasn't bad either.

I don't quite remember the film in that much detail.

I do remember two great pieces of dialogue.

  9. NP: Escape from tomorrow (Korzeniowski)

It's taken me a year or so to get around to this. Nice to hear celebratory, romantic scoring done well. I'm curious to see what sort of film this kind of music actually works in these days. Somehow I can buy into this a bit more than the equally rapturous W.E. score... I wonder why that is.

"Beyond the Forest" from Shore's Smaug.

Oh my god the delicious counterpoint in the middle of the piece!

Exceptional western score; my favourite by JG in that genre. So uplifting.

Rio Conchos is mine. Goldsmith's western scores are up there with the best.

If I were rich, the Goldsmith western scores that haven't received a re-recording would be the first thing I'd spend my money on. Well, straight after I bought the DeLorean from Back To The Future. And a movie quality Iron Man suit. And every Apple product.
  10. NP: Forrest Gump - Alan Silvestri

Night Train to Lisbon - Annette Focks

An A-grade score for Bille August's latest film, elegant and stylish with an alluring dash of romance to add to the compelling atmosphere.
  11. I'll be playing that one later tonight!

    For now it's Donaggio's PASSION.

Really good. A respite from some of the sonic-assaults that passes for film music.
