    NP : JAWS 2 - John Williams

Brilliant score for a piss-poor film.

Braveheart wasn't hilariously bad. Historically inaccurate? Yes. But it was a GREAT movie. Stalingrad on the other hand just looks fooking awful!

I can't agree. Howard hasn't written a really good score since The Water Horse. You keep bitching about Silvestri's latest output and rightfully so. Howard is in the same rut. After Earth is not good. Not good at all.

Crappy album though! But when it's good, it's really good. It would make an excellent 15-20 minute suite.

i don't think that women are given less a chance in the modern western culture, at all.

Just to make it clear (as I fear there may be some confusion), I'm not suggesting that women are oppressed in the industry, but that it's simply biased. Clearly something is up since there just aren't many female composers relative to male ones, and I see no logical reason why that should be true. And I'm not saying that people in the industry necessarily ignore women and seek to hire men, but that there's probably still a degree of bias towards men over women, thus opportunities are harder to come by for women in a very broad sense.

Anyway. I was just curious why there aren't many female composers... I certainly didn't mean for it to turn into a political statement. dizzy

This is an interesting discussion in the np thread:). We are to the point now where gender discrimination is mostly bias, and it's largely subconscious. When two individuals are equally qualified, a man is more likely to get the job. There is still a bias in society that leads people to believe that a man is more competent in most of the highest paying industries. Even in professions dominated by females, the CEOs are almost all men. Take the novel industry. My wife is a writer. Almost all of the other writers she knows and associates with are female. Nearly every literary agent is female. The overwhelming majority of editors are female. But once you get to the people running the publishing companies (the people making all the money) they're all men almost without exception. In some articles I've read they've said that a big part of the reason for this is aculturation. Take a walk through a toy store. Girl toys encourage them to play with dolls, cook food, dress up, etc. We still, as a society expect females to work in certain industries and males others. How many male flight attendants are there compared to females? Or nurses? Yet the pilots and doctors are male. Of course there are exceptions, but it's been interesting to look at the issue as a father of sons and a daughter. My four year old daughter wanted an airplane for Christmas. Guess how many airplanes you find in the girl's toy aisles. There are none. We don't expect our girls to want to play pilot.

There are probably many other reasons, but I would submit this as one reason that there are not as many female film composers. There are still not as many female composers of any kind of music. It's not because they would be worse at it. It's because we're training them to be the violinists or flautists instead. It's not just the parents, it's the teachers, the friends, the television and film industry, and especially the advertising industry (which plays into every conceivable stereotype). If a young woman aspires to excell in construction management people are surprised. If she wants to be an interior decorator they are not. Even this surprise teaches girls what they are expected to be, although the people acting surprised may not have intended that message.

One very positive acculturating exception is a tv program made by Disney called Doc Mcstuffins. It's about a little girl who plays at being a doctor. Her mother is a real doctor. And the whole family is black. Shortly after the show aired my daughter announced that she wanted to be a doctor.

So to sum up, there is probably a significant difference in opportunity for male and female composers at every step of the process, even if it's a subconscious one. And if there is a significant difference in interest in film scoring between men and women, which I'm sure there is, then it's because society has taught girls that they don't want to be a composer.

The company is named Feck, they are based in Australia and run sites like IFeelMyself and BeautifulAgony. And it's not so much "glamour" as low-key, natural, and respectful to it's contributors. Which are of both genders, actually, at least on the latter site.

In my opinion, they would mostly probably be better. More talented. At the very least, they would bring new ideas to the table. Opportunity and role models are all they lack.

Surely being a talented video editor is solely dependent on whether you're a talented video editor?

Call me a raging feminist, but my experience with the world thus far in my young little life has demonstrated to me that women are more likely to have more artistic talent that I enjoy than men. I'm not trying to make black and white statements. I'm just observing trends. In most areas of art that I am involved in, women produce things that I find more likeable and creative and engaging. My favorite author is female. My favorite screenwriter (Whedon) is a feminist and surrounds himself with female talent. My favorite erotica, I already mentioned. Even the designer lamps I just bought were created by a woman, and I found them after futile hours scrolling through mass-market lamps probably designed by males. Of course, none of this actually means women are "better" at these things. It just means I think they are based on my personal tastes. And I'm quite sure if our sample size of female film and game composers was more like 150 than 5-10, there would be some female film composers whose work I enjoyed as much or more than Williams, Zimmer, etc. There is vast untapped potential in film music that is just waiting to be mined in the future by young, fresh talents, and I think a lot of those will be female in the coming century.

    [edit]

JNH's After Earth at least contains some very nice cues, although the film is hideous: "abort mission", "after earth", "dad, are you there?", "ghosting", "i wanna work with mom", "i am not advancing you", "leaving nova prime". The other scores he put out after Water Horse have none of these. Shyamalan at least does something good to him wink Silvestri's output is piss-poor lately.

You forgot to mention THE ONE track that is really good -- i.e. "The Tail". Beyond that, though, there isn't much to hang on to. Knowing what JNH is capable of, this was quite disappointing, IMO.

I believe the site has been around for 10 years or more. But the point is that people are having genuine orgasms, unlike the vast majority of porn, where it's fake. The IFM site is the same concept, except it's full bodies and nudity. BeautifulAgony is like the SFW (ish) version. There's even a full nudity male site they tried to make, but hardly anyone subscribed and they had to shut down. What I don't understand is why more porn isn't like that, why do people just want to see generic pretty bodies going through generic animalistic motions? What I want is an emotional or mental connection to another person, even if its virtual. And that "want" is generally considered a more feminine desire. Which goes back to my original point that I'm more of a female soul and a feminist and I think "we" are capable of deeper and more soulfully engaging art. But as Demetris says, it's all a matter of taste.
