    WOW!

My top ten of 2013 list could be changing because of this one. Three tracks in and so far it's gorgeous!

And I'm quite sure if our sample size of female film and game composers was more like 150 than 5-10, there would be some female film composers whose work I enjoyed as much or more than Williams, Zimmer, etc. There is vast untapped potential in film music that is just waiting to be mined in the future by young, fresh talents, and I think a lot of those will be female in the coming century.

And why haven't all these female composers sprung out yet, since, well, the beginning of time? This is what we are trying to find out.

I think Christopher's rather insightful post above makes a lot of sense, and I agree with him. I think there are probably various factors involved, but the largest is probably a subconscious bias towards men (hence, less opportunities for women). It's all conjecture, but I think it's very reasonable conjecture.

Also, just to be clear, are you suggesting that women are less capable of composing music than men? (Correct me if I'm wrong!)

Personally I find no reason why women should be less capable composers as men, but then again perhaps there really is some truth to that? Perhaps it mirrors the way men are generally funnier than women? This is very wild conjecture on my part, but it's a thought I guess.

    Silvestri's output is piss-poor lately.

This is probably huge semantics and pickiness on my part, but I kind of have to take issue with the choice of words "piss-poor." No. Silvestri's work of late has been, at least to me, average. Certainly no more than that, but not incompetent or anything (with the exception of Red 2, which really was piss-poor). He's in a bit of a rut, perhaps (although parts of The Croods are more inspired than anything I've head from him in a while), but he's still writing essentially serviceable music that gets the job done despite not feeling particularly fresh or inspired.

...and yet this is a poorer action score by JG's superhuman standards wink ( and yes, I do like it! )

I disagree! (And since this is the Internet, it now means we're mortal enemies.) I actually find this to be one of his best action scores! I love it! punk

AGREE! ( I'd love a proper release of this with the film tracks. The film is well worth your time if you haven't seen it )

Are we no longer mortal enemies then?

No. We disagree about Marvel films. I don't think this can ever be reconciled. Pistols at dawn? I do my killing before breakfast.

True! (Though I quite enjoyed Man Of Steel. It was silly, and completely lacking in irony... but it was entertaining.)

LEGEND OF 1900 | ennio morricone

Triggered by Erik's Track of the Day post, I revisited this score that I seem to have forgotten because it was too long ago I listened to it. It's fantastic and 'The Legend of the Pianist' is one of its best tracks indeed. Great music to start the day!

It's a fine score, although I'm always a bit "annoyed" by that last sour note of the main theme -- even though it's an intentional 'gimmick' from Morricone. I like the Roger Waters song version at the end, being such a big Pink Floyd fan.
    I am extremely serious.

Breezy, fresh, poignant, this is a lovely score, very enjoyable. ( though how it ever beat Star Trek The Motion Picture to best score Oscar will forever elude me )
