Brilliant score! Superlative IMO and one of my two favourite ever Delerue scores.

NP : LE PLANETE SAUVAGE ( aka FANTASTIC PLANET ) - Alain Goraguer

Brilliant pop-jazzy-quasi-baroque score to 1973 sci-fi animation, some of it sounds like it could be music for a porno or an early 70's TV thriller and throw in a smattering of George Martin's Live And Let Die plus the odd atonality here and there, and I mean that as a positive.

Very recommended to those of you with an open-ear. And yes, it's available on Spotify.

NP: Captain America - Henry Jackman

This morning, I realized a few things about this score.

    1. One, the Steve Rogers/Captain America theme (heard throughout the score in various guises, as well as in full form in "Taking a Stand") is basically the Batman Theme redux in major mode. And it's glorious catchy and good. No, it's not the same as taking Silvestri's theme and doing something else with it, but I do admire that Henry is weaving that theme throughout the running time. The remixed version is very enjoyable.

    2. Two, the Winter Soldier music should end up being a perfect representation of the character. Henry provided for the Bucky Barnes character what Hans did for the Joker. An identifiable electronic call for angry action. A motif for chaos and explosive discord. The sound design is unique and make Howard Scarr's work in TDK seems subtle in comparison. I'm most looking forward to this aspect in the movie.

So, Captain America - The Winter Soldier is basically Marvel's take on The Dark Knight and you can hear various elements from the Zimmer sequel score in this. They even hired one of the composers who worked on it. I don't think the score is as horrible travesty as others have characterized it. I do think that my expectation for this score was high, but this isn't the best version of the score either.
  3. Still not on spotify in Germany ...

It's the least of my complaints about this score, but I thought that this theme was really weak. It's just a really vague set of ascending notes for brass. It goes through the basic motions of what a theme is supposed to do but without any sense of melody whatsoever. The best thing about this score is the last five minutes or so of the final long cue, which is the best presentation of this theme, and even that is fourth-rate in the pantheon of MV/RC themes.

Say what you will about Steve Jablonsky, at least his themes tend to be longer-lined and have some sense of melody to them.

As in Ender's Game, right? wink

Sometimes some score registers with you that doesn't with anyone else. Just happens.
I recently saw Ender's Game and I like the score even more now. Btw, the film IMO was surprisingly good. It captured more of the novel than I expected it to do.

I don't understand how it can be vague when it exist in various arrangements throughout the album. I'm sure you want it to be more than two notes being modulated up and down the scale. Your complaints echoes what was said about Zimmer's original Batman theme, but being sparse doesn't make the resulting thematic material weak. As a theme, it's just fine for me, and I know that this was a conscious decision since Henry can write a melody. It's not completely melodic in the same sensibility that Silvestri's version satisfied, but we all know in our hearts that it's not possible even if Alan had scored the sequel.

It's one reason why I really like his score to the Transformers movie. It's thematic, melodic, motivic, and bold.

In this case, I can't agree. I didn't like Zimmer's Batman "theme" and I don't like this. Yes, it's used throughout the score and yes, it's memorable (in the sense that it's not exactly hard to remember two, three notes), but they simply aren't satisfying enough to represent the larger-than-life characters that they're supposed to stand for.

Yes! The main theme to that I think is pretty good. It's the (lack of) supporting material that lets that score down IMO.

  11. NP: Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Henry Jackman

Giving this a listen at the moment and just about coming to the end of it. I haven't listened to all of the cues - tracks such as "Fury", "The Winter Soldier" and "The Causeway" are just unlistenable - but, I have to admit, I can't see where all the 100% negativity is coming from.

There's about 20 minutes of music that is perfectly listenable. Yes, a lot of this is your typical modern day action scoring and doesn't really have any identity but with tracks such as "The Smithsonian" and "Taking A Stand" where there does seem to be a bit of patriotism and excitement, Jackman's score doesn't deserve the blanket dismissal it has been getting.
