    Listening again it's more murder/mystery/film noir meets James Bond cool

    I don't remember much about the movie beyond the total lack of charisma between the two lead actors and being attacked by mechanical wasps.

    It must be said that McNeely's take on Laurie Johnson's original theme is very lacking in the smooth, suave sophistication of the awesome original classic theme love

    NP: MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN (Danny Elfman)

    Just arrived...in a silly cardboard box with a colouring book?! Why would children, who that part is aimed for, be interested in a symphonic soundtrack in the first place? Nah, this spin-off strategy is weird. That being said, the score is fine for what it is --- a rambunctious affair with elements of FLUBBER and Elfman's more recent animations. Not my favourite sound of his these days, but I have to buy it all....

    Yup. When it comes to Elfman (and Williams and Goldenthal), it's the only time I can call myself a soundtrack 'collector' in the traditional sense of the word.

    First off, kudos for writing the right spelling 'colouring', I agree with some Americanisms 'centre' becoming 'center' for example but color is just plain wrong and that's a FACT! ( and I'm sure my fellow spelling Nazi, Steven, will agree )

    Anyway, a cardboard box with a colouring book? How pointless and gimmicky, reminds me of of the silly Lost World: Jurassic Park packaging.

  21. NP: The Ice Pirates (1984) - Bruce Broughton

    A peculiar oddball of a film this one is and likewise its score. I happen to love both. I could hardly believe my eyes when I first discovered the title on the FSM list. Kudos to Lukas Kendall!

    As usual, Southall's review just about sums it up. There is one minor -and it's a very minor- quibble; there's something rather synthetic about the sound, at least in part? I'm led to understand that it's fully orchestral? That may indeed be the case, but perhaps something about the recording has resulted in it sounding, well, a little synthy? It sounds like Zimmer's Muppert Treasure Island in parts (it also bears some resemblance to the Inception theme/chords in places, which I actually rather like).

    Though this is not to detract from what is a fine piece of work. It really is a gem.

    Nope, it's definitely not a horribly encoded MP3, I can assure you. It's the sound of the music itself. Perhaps it's a very 'tight' recording on the individual elements in the orchestra, and when put together it doesn't quite sound so... organic? There's definitely something about it.

    Personally I think John Barry's HOWARD THE DUCK is a fantastic score tongue


    The Amazing Spiderman WAS one of the closest to how-super-hero-scores-should-sound works of the last decade. Loved it, loved it, wished for more of this approach but obviously, it doesn't sell well with the 15 year olds.
    Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

    Thor, just curious, since it's not your taste these days (i'd not blame you man, it's friggin Flubber all over again), then why do you say you 'have' to buy it? What forces you to? :cheers:
