    ^ Highly underrated! Silvestri should make a concert suite out of "The Cradle of Life" and "Pandora's Box." Stunning, music!

    NP: BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD (Benh Zeitlin & Dan Romer)

    Bluegrass/hillbilly/Delta-type music always makes me weary after a couple of tracks, but they managed to balance it well with more stringent melancholy and 'classical' tropes in this one.
    I am extremely serious.

  7. "Once There Was a Hushpuppy" is an excellent cue, although I must admit I haven't been enticed back to the rest since the first time I heard it...

    Critters (1986) - David Newman
    The 1993 Intrada release.

    As a teenager I loved this film. Certainly more than Gremlins. And I had a huge crush on Nadine van de Velde (April). love

    This is one of the earliest scores by David Newman. I have no memory of it. Indeed it never occured to me to investigate the composer or a release of the score. Let's see how it goes.

    It's a shame the rest of the score is plagued by those cheap sounding electronics.

    Why can't Silvestri write another score like The Mummy Returns? Five star material right there.

    Yeah, maybe in the style of the wonderful NORTH & SOUTH/THE RIGHT STUFF CD. But only after having sampled it first.

    Actually, I think the electronics and patented Silvestri percussion works rather well in this score.

  14. The electronics somehow manage to blend better with his music in Cradle of life than they did in his action scores from G.I. Joe onwards, despite those scores being several years more recent. How does that even happen? tongue

    Yup, just like that. That one was my first CD, BTW. Oh, those memories... saw it in a shop and had to have it, despite the fact that I didn´t even have a CD player back then in... what was it... 1986? 87? Something like that... great album, fantastic sound, and I had been hoping for a score for both of these jewels for some time then...

    It wasn't my first CD or soundtrack, but it was the first thread I made on the FSM messageboard back in 1998 --i.e. asking if somebody had it for sale. Gerry Kroll of Soundtrackers responded and after having sent him a letter with physical dollar bills, I received it a few weeks later. Different times!

    Ralph, I didn't think it was as bad as our esteemed critics here suggested, I do like some of the tracks but I was still very underwhelmed by this "superhero" score.

    That´s the thing. This is no superhero movie (at least not a typical one). It´s a thriller that happens to have a superhero in it, which, I think, was a brilliant choice for that specific character. I have a feeling a lot of people critizise the score just because it´s something they didn´t expect, but the movie isn´t either, which is why I find the bashing more than unfair. Yes, it may be that is doesn´t have the quality of Bourne (even if I´ll never get why those are rated so high - they are good and inventive, yes, but they are not and shouldn´t be a dogma, which they kind of have become).

    Yeah, 94% rottentomatoes! I am really glad it seems they made him perhaps more likable and kick-ass in this movie than the soft, mamma's pretty boy he was in Avengers and the first Captain America film.

    Those cues are OK, but even so I find Jackman's theme to be structurally weak. It's just a vaguely heroic ascending interval (holy Hans Zimmer, Batman!). I'm sure you're going to write back with how he doesn't deserve a full theme because he's in a modern time where the concept of the "hero" is no longer applicable blah blah blah zzzzz sleep WHATEVER. It's a weak theme to me, regardless of whatever justifications you want to throw at it.

    Nonsense, my mind works along too simple ways for me to make such cheap excuses. biggrin Instead, I´ll just state that it is a full theme (mind the horns!), just played veeeeeeerrrrryyyyyyyy slowly and carried by the ostinati. tae. tisms.

    @ D: You won´t find him weak at all the moment the very first action scene begins. Geez, this movie is brutal.
