    Yeah, I felt the same way too. Love the composition, but there is something "off" in the recording, organic-wise. Could it be as simple as a mix of acoustic & sampled instruments?

  2. I do find myself being a 'completist' for film franchises. It's nice to complete a set and see/hear the musical development (regardless of whether themes, etc are carried over).

    (But I do not have a copy of Omen IV!)

    I'm a John Barry completest but even he is 2nd to my love for Kilkline.

    NP: STANDING UP (Brian Tyler)

    The more downtempo, melodic parts of this score are absolutely gorgeous! THIS is what I'd like to hear more of from Tyler. Of course, there are also some of those classic ostinato thingies, even here, which is rather surprising.

    NP : PREHISTORIC PARK - Daniel Pemberton


    Another docu-fiction with that berk Nigel Marven running around through time collecting prehistoric animals, scraping the barrel leftovers of the likes of the Walking With series.

    Nothing "scraping the barrel" about the score though which is very enjoyable, even the Zimmerish Man of Steel-like main titles ( pre-dating it even ) are very catchy, the rest of the score sounds like Pemberton paid close attention to Benjamin Bartlett's 'Walking With...' scores, and that's no bad thing.

  13. NP: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) - Howard Shore
    The commercial release.

    The Shore LOTR score is a rock solid sure thing with me!
    So much so in fact that I see it on par with the original SW trilogy. I adore every minute of the commercial releases. I love how they mirror the structure of the novels.

    An LP-to-CD transfer. It's extremely rambunctious and at times a bit too intense (with loads of 'screaming brass'), but the good parts are.....well, good. I just wish it had been rerecorded in sparkling sound quality. Screaming brass and scratchy sound quality is not my favourite combo.

    I actually deleted the album from my iTunes and my harddisk after this revisit, and will never buy it again in any form or shape. However, I still like the film and the music in context.

    I've never understood why you would want to do that, unless you were seriously running out of space on your computer or something. Even then - get a hard drive! You never know when you might want to revisit a score that you dismissed or haven't heard in years because you didn't like it. What harm would it do you if you just left it to gather virtual cobwebs somewhere, rather than killing it outright?

  30. Nathan Furst - Need for Speed

    A cleaner and more melodic version of Brian Tyler, while a tad more boring. Very well structured, with an amazing theme.
