NP: STAR WARS - The Prequel Trilogy - John Williams
My own playlist.
I just made the mistake of visiting theforce.net. I have come to avoid SW related talkbacks because I can't stand all that self absorbed hate and the spitefulness that is going on there. While I agree that the original films were overall the better movies I still find that 80% of the anti-prequel-arguments also apply for the originals. But what is completely beyond me is how anyone can take popcorn cinema that darn serious. "He raped my childhood?" Really, what a pitiful childhood that must have been.
So i needed that music as an antidote.

Not really. BLOOD DRAGON is more a pastiche over Moroder, Fiedel, TD etc. This is more original, perhaps with elements of Daft Punk here and there. Check out this great track, for example:

The originals, for the most part, trancend their plot holes and inconsistencies with solid central stories and characters, strong mythological aspects, iconic imagery and some very well directed scenes in the following two films (granted, Star Wars was badly directed, but the simplistic story plus the limitations of a low budget in the 70s put on Lucas were a blessing, largely saved by the music, the editing and the special effects).
The prequels suffer from everything that was faulty with the originals plus a lack of strong characters, an over-indulgence in CGI, and a distinct lack of understanding of what made Star Wars popular from a director who was drunk with power. This is why the prequels fail, because there is nothing to tie the mess together. Not even the music helped this time round.
Sorry, but the prequels suck no matter how much you like them. -

Great music -- and unusually uptempo for Martinez -- but FAR too long album at 80 minutes. This has to stop already!

The first 8 or 10 cues are just sensational. Still stands up as one of the best things he's ever done and certainly one of the best horror scores of recent times. -

From a 1998 interview:
Of all the scores you’ve written to date, what’s the one you’d like to see on CD that is not?
A compilation of earlier films, like THE KRAYS, MONA LISA, there’s probably some stuff that could come out of THE DEAD ZONE – it has an album, but I don’t think it’s very complete. And a compilation of actual old soundtracks. The views and opinions of Ford A. Thaxton are his own and do not necessarily reflect the ones of ANYONE else. -

I'm surprised - but delighted - about the comments on The Dead Zone (I spent a lot of time years ago going through the film and trying to link it up with the various album tracks. Maybe I missed a lot, or there was a lot written for but not used in the final film?) Yeah, I have a colleague who loves that too. Personally, I don't get it. I don't see the retro references that you speak of and for me it's mostly a noisy affair with little direction. I'll take DAYS OF THUNDER any day over this.I am extremely serious. -

BOGOWIE - Bartosz Chajdecki
I was really glad to see this one get a US itunes release. I assume it's available in Europe as well? His scores last year were only available in Europe, so it's nice to see his platform expanding (both this and his WARSAW UPRISING scores were released in the US this year).
As for BOGOWIE, I think it's nearly as strong as WARSAW UPRISING, and I definitely recommend it for fans of Chajdecki. My favorite tracks after just one listen were "Maly Labirynt" (with piano and strings, it manages to be quite elegant and urgent at the same time and gets pretty grand by the end). The theme and orchestration in this track must accompany the film's most dramatic moments because it pops up again several more times, tinkered with to one degree or another. "Duzy Labirynt"adds some electric guitar, bass, and drums in much the same way Chajdecki used them in WARSAW. "Tykanie" is a return to that sound without the added elements in "Duzy Labirynt." "Determinacja" is a shorter version of that idea that is probably the most climactic and adds the guitars and drums again. If were you only going to sample one track to see the merits of the score, I would recommend one of these four.
