NP: The Little Wizard - Marc Timón Barceló

Richly orchestrated, lush, thoroughly melodic and exciting score from a guy with his feet very clearly planted in traditional scoring. Some echoes of Williams, some of Rozsa...but no copying or overt nudges! No soundscaping, electronic drumscapes or moody synth oodlings here either, but choir and orchestra going at it full force for this -apparently- minor kiddie animation flick.

Great stuff! Barceló clearly is a name to look out for in future.

    Love this.

Everyone raved about his stage music for COLISEUM last year (and how it mixed Rozsa with more modern stylings), and while I certainly see values, I wasn't as enthusiastic about this as I was WIZARD.
    I am extremely serious.

I really liked his Coliseum, but I think I may prefer Little Wizard as well. I'll give Coliseum another spin in a minute!

    NP: Luther - Richard Harvey
Beautiful but mainly minor (as in "in a minor key") string and choir work, as was fitting for the subject matter of this (rather flawed and boring) film. Of course it wouldn't be a proper Harvey score if it didn't have some truly beautiful Renaissance-esque writing in it. He truly excels at that!

    Inception Hans Zimmer/Lorne Balfe etc.

Much like The Matrix (and the comparison isn't arbitrary), it draws inspiration from a variety of other sources but culminates into entirely its own thing. How much Zimmer actually composed is unknown to me, but this remains my favourite Zimmer 'creation', closely followed by Interstellar. Brilliant film music.

    NP: STEALTH (BT)

I love how my own radio programs give me tips of fine albums! This I only had as a main titles on the Varese 30th compilation untill I got the soundtrack in advance of my program on DJs and film music. Well, it's definitely one of BT's best. Love it when he goes all breakbeat, but the John Powell-ish mix of orchestra and electronic loops are cool too.
    I am extremely serious.
  1. NP: Poltergeist (Marc Streitenfeld)

What a piece of garbage. An insult that this score even got a release. Of course it couldn't compete with Jerry Goldsmith's masterpiece, but from track 2 it's an ongoing assault of mood, atonality and mere sfx without the slightest hint of a melody, idea or wink towards the original. The lullaby is decent (that's track 1) but the rest is NOISE that hurts the ears.

Fucking bullshit is what it is, another testament to a score that's merely there to underscore the film, not elevate or god forbid move the listener (or audience). Oh god how I miss Jerry in these times sad

    LUV - Nuno Malo

Very sparse, at times borderline ambient, it's certainly got a captivating quality.

i love this score, but its not only composed by BT. many parts, especially the thematic ones (pilots theme) are composed by trevor morris. michael di mattia also composed additional music. but its nonetheless a nice effort by BT and is a great mix of orchestral and electronic/techno elements.

Definitely, along with Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome and Poltergeist.
  3. NP: Big Pharma - Mark Allsworth

A catchy retro electronic score this one, composed for a video game. Listen to it here:

  4. The Perfect Storm Horner

There's some fantastic music here and each track taken on it's own I love but for some reason I've always found this a slog to get through in one sitting.

Excellent score this one: dark and brooding with some great solo strings.
