War Of The Worlds: Perfect because it hasn't got a main theme, and I find it to be a very easy listen.

I Am Legend: Really good score. Can't understand why some people didn't notice the main theme in the film? It was used at least 3-4 times? Also can't understand why it was partly rejected, it would have heightened the sense of loneliness, fear and awe to levels which the film needed. (I saw the film last night and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought.)

    There, Steven has spoken.

Agree. Really good score and a great listening experience.
Yep, the main theme is used in the film at least 3 times (plus the end credits suite), and it´s amazing how it fits with the visuals of the empty city and Neville´s loneliness.

Me too, I enjoyed the film more than I could have imagined. A different ending would have been better IMO, but good film overall. As for the score, I thought after watching the film that it didn´t really need more music, but after listening the full score I can´t avoid thinking how great the music would have worked.

Real shame isn't it? I totally agree that a better ending was needed, something with a bit more impact. Perhaps my Westernized-Hollywood conditioned mind prefers that to a quite ending like we got in the film, but I think a big, loud orchestral suite of JNH's themes would have worked better. Audiences like a definitive ending to a film.

    I Am Legend | JNH

Even though most of it wasn't used, I can still appreciate it a lot more now having seen the film... this would have worked brilliantly!

Yes, a shame, I think another ending was imperative but you know, Hollywood is Hollywood, rare times can we see "another" ending ; I think it would have made the film far more shocking.

And this choral cues from the soundtrack, wow, they would have worked wonders in the film, a shame too they were removed (or don´t used) in the final cut.

  1. Apparently they shot a very happy ending for the film, and the film you see features a reworking of the ending to give things a bit more weight.

  2. SPOILER

Doesn't the film basically end with him going out and getting killed - a sort of suicide mission? In the film as they shot it, he gets away with the survivors he's found.

Yes the film ends as you say.
Ouch, that original ending you talk about would have ruined the film, too saccharine.
But even I don´t dislike the end I´d have loved even a more dramatic ending, you know, no cure, no possible salvation, no human alive on earth, etc.

    END SPOILERS

NP: I AM LEGEND - James Newton Howard - The Evacuation

Wow... I love it when that main theme kicks in... and that vocal towards the end... Beautiful! shocked A really great track, for a really good score. JNH's best of the year / last year!

  3. The ending of the book isn't that there's no cure, but that the disease isn't really what he thought it was. He realises that the creatures have begun to develop as a culture. Here's the wikipedia version:

Before he can be executed, Ruth provides him with an envelope of pills. Neville takes the pills to commit suicide before the still living execute him. As he dies he reflects on how the new society of the living infected regards him as a monster. Just as vampires were regarded as legendary monsters that preyed on the vulnerable humans in their beds, Neville has become a mythical figure that kills both vampires and the infected living while they are sleeping. He becomes a legend as the vampires once were, hence the title "I Am Legend".

It would have been a better ending, but it wouldn't have made near as much money.

Terrific action score with stunning complexity and truly pushes the limits of the orchestra (particularly in "Attack on the Car" and "Escape from the City"), but am I the only one who thinks a main theme would made this score even better?

I know Spielberg wanted a return to Jaws-styled scoring for this film, but even that score had a recognizable theme.

Well, there is a recognizable motif for the bad guys! The motif is a low brass motif which is kind of a throw back to B-monster movies of the 50's. It's played in the low brass. 6 notes.

It's mainly bcauseof the Neville theme that is attracts a lot of attention. Besides that and the reigion inspired theme, there's not much indeed. Good and satisfying listen, but there it stops.

It has cool drums. That makes it mind-blowing.

(and I haven't even heard the album yet, I'm just speaking from in the movie, there were amazing Jablonsky-like bass drums in the scene where he rescues the dog from the darkseekers.

I think i'm the only person on MT that finds such enjoyment in really good deep drums. cool

^ Exactly. I'm not saying it's shit... it's good but nothing mind blowing. IMHO, The Water Horse is still JNH's best of '07.

That was exactly my feeling about The Water Horse. But some moments of I Am Legend, like the thematic moments in Evacuation, touch me like nothing in Water Horse did. So that makes IAL his best work of recent years for me, it has a lot more heart to it smile

It's not brilliant, alright, I give you that (let's not overrate it), and it probably has more to do with his weak efforts of late that this is his best... I also agree that the action cues aren't brilliant, or anything, just functional.
