The fuckheads that make up my country's population that think that destroying own citizens' and public belongings, i.e. our very own country, is a way to protest for the murder of a (seemingly) innocent teenager by the police. What the fuck, how sick and shithead one must be? And to think that there are people who suggest that no people are actually IDIOTS in this world and there's not such thing as LOW IQ, just "different points of view".

Remember the other day i told Martijn that Greece at its current state isn't capable of much? Well, make that "absolutely nothing". Disgusting, upsetting and very disappointing.

I agree Demetris. They are sick, fucked up people and nothing more. As sick and fucked up as the asshole policeman who murdered in cold blood and without a reason a 15 year old boy.

It's completely unclear to me what actually and exactly happened there, except that Greece has suddenly caught fire, so I'll leave the comments for later.

Suffice to say that I'm sorry for you and yours, D. and Stavi, and I hope things simmer down as soon as possible so you can breathe normally and happier again, and we can get to the bottom of this.

Saturday night a group of 15-16 year old kids drink coffee at one of the most popular squares in Athens. The square is known to be the centre of anarchists but not all people there are anarchists. The kids have a misunderstanding with two police officers who get out of their car and one of them in cold blood shoots against them. He killed Alex, a 15 year old boy. Since that moment all students, teachers all of us felt the need to protest against this unbelievable crime. So protests began, schools all closed and there is a strike tomorrow and the day after. The thing is that there are some people who stepping on Alex's death found it convinient to begin riots and destructions which had nothing to do with the peaceful protests of the students. This has resulted in what you see on tv. The whole country burns.

He is accused for intended homicide. There are a lot of things that need to be changed in this country, starting from the rotten head that is the retarded government who're watching the chaos and doing ABSOLUTELY nothing about it, they're vanished, they haven't proceeded to any public appearances or announcements and have ordered the police and fire department to do nothing but to sit and watch!

Can you imagine what is going to happen tomorrow in the funeral?! Do you think that any of the asshole politics of this country will have the nerve to go there? And who the hell are all these criiminals who burn and destroy in the name of a dead child? Do they think that the citizens of the country agree? They are as bad and as rotten as the murdered. All of them!

    Extreme leftwing anarchists.
It's the kind of guys that have just been waiting for anything to happen to use as an excuse for ransacking, looting, mayhem and terror.
Greece does have a bit of a history with them, apparently, as much the same thing happened in the seventies (and to a lesser extend in the eighties and nineties during anti-globalist and anti-capitalist riots and protests). Obviously that was against a military dictatorship. This -going against a democratically elected government, and turning normal hardworking Greeks' lives on their heads in the meantime- is of another order altogether.

As fara s the shooting goes: there are other reports that the mob of young adults were homing in on the officers in such a threatening manner that the officers felt compelled to open fire. However, unless the officers in question are being seriously scapegoated here, that version won't hold much water as the officers concerned have now been fired, arrested and jailed.

    It's a mess.

That was the first thing that was said. As it was discovered a few hours later the kids were there because one of them had his name day and they were celebrating. They police car was passing by and the kids shouted some things and they had a minor verbal fight. The "Rambo"guy thought it good to step out of the cat stand in a 100 metre distance and shoot in cold blood "to teach them a lesson". The boy who was killed was not an anarchist, nor a criminal. He was a boy who went out to celebrate his best friend's name day. Nothing more.

Demetris told me of Greece's current state before. I guess this is a culmination of what was cooking all this time. Again students are in the center of all this. What does the older generation think?

    Jesus wept. sad

I thought the officers wouldn't have been actually arrested if it hadn't been really bad.
I didn't know it was that bad.

Just to make clear what I'm sure you already know: the students are not the ones destroying Greece right now.
I think that all of as believe that crime to be unthinkable but surely the riots where not the way to protest about it. And yes Bregt I believe that all this anger is a result of many things. Alex's death was just the las drop.

No Antony they didn't attack, they had a verdal fight. Nobody knows why he did it. And none all police officers are this way obviously. He is a bad nut who caused the country to flame up.

During the next day we'll know exactly what happened. But many eye witnesses say what I wrote above. People who were drinking their coffee just where the incident happen. They can't be all liars. The other explanation it that he shot in the air and the bullet recosated and hit the child instead of shooting him in cold blood. Even if this is the case he SHOT in the center of Athens, against kids. How much asshole must you be to do that?!? He killed this boy because he wanted to play the role of the mucho cap!

I understand my dear Stavi here, but i am more restrained as to draw conclusions yet. I've seen people with covered faces breaking up and lighting up banks, universities, shops, cars and houses and using the universities they don't burn as their covering places and nobody is sure who's behind the masks, students, shoolboys and brats, left-wing fuckhead anarchists, it could be anyone as far as i am concerned. Not sure about anyone's innocence anymore; this country's society is rotten in all aspects.

Also nobody knows exactly what happened with the police and the boy, surely the police man reacted extremely immature, illogically, unprofessionally and unreasonable but we all know that nobody kills someone who walks carelessly down the street minding their own business. Something happened there, the Rambo acted silly yes, but something happened. Only the investigations will show, the bullet is being investigated as we speak about whether it actually blackballed (like the police man who killed the boy allegates) or if it was a direct kill.

I don't disagree with you Demetris. The ones who destroy the country have no excuse to do so.And I don't give a damn who they are either.
And yes perhaps something happened. But whatever happened, and pretty soon as you say we'll know, does not excuse the cap as well. Calling names, even throwing things at someone does not give him the excuse to get his gun out and shoot. Either directly or in the air. This is the conclusion I draw D. And perhaps I'm a bit more sentimental because I work with kids like Alex. With kids his age and I feel as if he was one of mine. And also I know almost every building burnt in Athens. Buildings I was going shopping to, cafes i was planning to visit during Christmas. Now I won't.

Please keep us updated on the news. wink

Is it just the cop, or is there some big corruption in the police or something?

The shooting kind of reminds me of the Favela incident in Brazil. I don't think it is any wear near that kind of problem though.
  1. My sympathy with you guys. I always liked you Greek and this didn't spoil my plan to visit your country one day.

It's something that's very unfamiliar outside of Greece and some parts of Middle America, D. smile
I think there used to be some celebration of it in Belgium and the southern parts of the Netherlands back until maybe the thirties or so of the last century, but it's largely unknown these days throughout most of the western world.

Oh! Hm, interesting custom. Never heard of it, really. I suppose because this happened on the boy's name day, that will make it particularly difficult to dissociate these events from that particular name in the future, then...

Didn't mean to detract from the tragedy of the moment with my question... It's really hard to say anything that won't just put more oil on the fire in a situation like this. It's all just so unfortunate to live in such a volatile world.
