I have to write a paper and I can't focus. I can focus when I have to read, but when I start typing no decent sentence is appearing. I think that is because I have been very lazy for a week and I just have to restart the engine. Nothing works. I tried being very kind to myself because it was sunday, saturday or christmas day (you don't have to do it if you don't want to... why don't you just quit and read a nice book again?) and I tried being very rude to myself because the day doesn't really matter of course (you looser, you can't even write a simple small paper, you're a failure!). Neither is working.
So, I just keep going. Do a couple of lines each time. Untill it is done, hopefully. I think once I got a few pages it will get better. I'm still at the very beginning. It's weird because the first paper I had to do I wrote in one day and it was OK. This one I started about a month ago and it is still almost blank.
I thought maybe it's because I haven't listened much film music this week either, so I'm picking that up today. See what happens. I just feel a little bit... out of focus. -

I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago when suddenly, after months of doing completely different things, I had to write a 10 page essay on a subject I was fairly uneducated in. It was irritating, but from experience I knew that I would start to work fast the day before the deadline. Because even though I didn't find the subject much inspiring to write about, I knew that I always get excited by the challenge to produce a large amount of work in very little time. So like the eccentric idiot that I am, I waited untill the last day before I really started writing, using the days before to just read about my subject. People would ask me "how are you getting along with that paper, Mark? And I'd reply something like "I'm waiting for my inspiration to come before I start writing". The funny thing is that it always works. Just ask all the film composers how they do it!

To put it very simply: 3D Sound. Basically, starting from 6 or 8-channel surround systems and expanding with the use of an added experimental 3rd dimension, i.e sound coming from above and from below but of course specifically recorded in such a way. Companies and sound labs all over the world are digging psychoacoustics to test new technologies (3d sound is one of them, "2+2+2" and wavefield synthesis for anyone who wants to look them up) 'cause it's widely known that our auditory perception and our ears are of such magnificence that conventional 2-channel stereophony can't really satisfy. We did such a psychoacoustics' test ourselves which we designed, recorded and conducted but on a smaller scale, with just 20 people as subjects. The results are very, very promising and encouraging.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

I'm well impressed, D.
Me, I'm still mustering up the courage to do just a single little stupid thesis of no more than 60 pages. And I've already been postponing it for two years.

Yes, I work best under pressure too (although a nasty side effect is that when there is no pressure yet I am already building up stress until the pressure is there and I have to do it). I really want to learn how to work without pressure. I think many people have this experience.
Problem now is there is no deadline.
I decided for myself I'd do one in week 1 and another one in week 2 of my time off. So I made a deadline myself but apparently that isn't working. And the longer I wait, the harder it gets. I have even been thinking of doing the second one first, because maybe that will motivate me more because it will feel like a fresh start? The stupid thing is, it is only 7 pages max. I think the difficult thing with this one is I have to write about such 'obvious' things. Well, not really that obvious, but it feels like it needs no explanation anymore and still I have to explain it in 7 pages... yes, that pretty much descibes why I feel so blocked and I don't know where to start. It's all here in the books and in my mind, I only have to write it down, that's all!! -

Yeah, postponing does weird things to the mind. Makes everything even bigger and more difficult than it really is! Just jump. Into it. And have a buddy, for deadlines and feedback.
Hm, maybe I will follow my own advice then and e-mail a co-student or something...
And I think I will take a look at the other paper, perhaps do that one first, I'm so tired of staring at this one.

Bregje! You can't be lazy for a week!

Aaah, Martijn. 60 pages in two years? What the hell is it about?
Demetris, good luck with the final preparations of your thesis! I had mine last year, and while certainly not as expanded and professional as yours (I'm just sure it is
), the feeling of letting that things go, is awesome.

Oh believe me mate, i WANT as well but the cost of such a system as we speak is enormous. Plus there are very few recordings out there in such a format. But i can assure you the effect is mind-blowing.
Check one of the 3d sound formats here, it's actually what we tested in the lab. It's quite good;

I assume you need several different microphones opposed to the one (for live stuff) and more channels to shove SFX in when in post? -

True.
I've been putting it off so long it's really grown beyond me in a way.
A friend of mine really aptly described it as my albatross.
He is so right.

Just jump. Into it.
I have this overwhelming sense that I can't do that anymore, even though it should be as simple as that. I understand the dynamics. I know what needs to be done. I just can't get started...and I know why as well: I've put it off too long and it has become too big, and I am unable to take that hurdle... and too damn proud to ask for help.
And have a buddy, for deadlines and feedback.
And that's exactly what I should do, and will be doing.
I really need to kick my own backside here.
The excuse I'm always using is that I dow ork hard enough (and I do...just not at this). It needs to stop. I need to toughen up here and just go that extra damn mile.
Hm, maybe I will follow my own advice then and e-mail a co-student or something...
Good luck, Bregje.
You know we're all still damn proud and impressed you've picked this up and are still rolling with it, don't you?

Yeap. Suffice to tell you that we used 10 microphones ONLY for one piano on one system (6-channel 3d sound) and 18 mics, again ONLY for one piano, for the 8-channel experimental 3d sound system.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
