Yeah, I guess teaching wouldn't be my thing at all.
Especially where adolescents are concerned, I'd be more of a fire and brimstone kinda teacher, which I think in this day and age is frowned upon. slant

    Me too!

It doesn't put me in a good light but when David is struggling with some maths homework I just end up getting frustrated that he doesn't "get it" after I have gone through it. At that point Anne has to take over.

I bought Avatar and Inception (I had a copy of Inception first shame ). I also ordered How To Train Your Dragon. Can't wait! It will take 2-3 weeks though...

I always love fun shopping! cheesy

Why will it take 2-3 weeks Bregje?

    I don't know... import?

What worries me more is if I will receive an e-mail in two weeks saying "sorry, this product cannot be delivered". In that case I could have ordered from Amazon or something right away.

I'm just a bit surprised you didn't order from Amazon? You'd probably have it within a day or two.

I probably come from the end of an age where teachers could get away with a bit of brutality, I remember having my ears pulled, forehead rapped with knuckles, caned on the hand etc, one particular teacher was very sadistic, even if I saw him today lo these many years later, me an him would be having "a little chat".

  2. Brutality in schools! Those were the days. We used to have some teachers who seemed to delight in giving out punishment. We used to have a two-tongued leather belt rather than a cane that was used for corporal punishment. One teacher would keep his over his shoulder, under his jacket. And everyone knew that was where it was!

And if a teacher had a particularly good aim, he could throw a wooden-backed blackboard "duster" at people in the class. Particularly useful for a group of kids who were chatting in a group at the back and completely unaware that the projectile was headed their way!

Ah yes, the "faithful" blackboard duster, I forgot about that. My P.E. teacher ( another sadistic shite ) used to use the sole of a training shoe, he was super fit and no one could hit harder than he could, eventually someone got their dad to pay him a visit and he had a personality change after that biggrin

    Just 20 days? sad
(That's what I get as well, incidentally, but I do honestly think teachers deserve a bit more.
That said, I think teachers in Greece are NOT the most enviable professional group right now sad )

Mediterranean countries seem to be going the same way indeed but believe you me when I say that at least in Greece teachers are the most underpayed group in the public sector and that the 2 months we get off are very well deserved considering the circumstances under which we work. Of course if you work in the office like me this year the time off is much less.

Well, I don't like to think of it as 'deserving'. I can think of many jobs where people deserve it but don't have it.

I don't think teachers deserve it but it's just something that goes with the job. You get paid for the average hours you work. But you never work average hours. In the holidays you don't work, in school weeks you work more.

Of course in the final weeks it's very busy and stressfull and we all say to eachother "Just a couple more weeks! We surely deserve it!". It's more like a rythm thing. You work hard and you know what will be after that. And after the weeks off, you know there will be weeks of hard work.

Perhaps I don't work enough to understand and we don't have to live from my salary, but I never got the 'underpaid' complaints. My jaw dropped when I saw what I was going to get. Perhaps it was impressive because it was my first real job after finishing a serieus education? All I thought was "wow, and this is only 1/4 of a job." And I'm even still on the lowest sport of the ladder in scale. I'm not complaining.

    Good for you, girl. smile

My sister is living from it, though, and even in The Netherlands it's not brilliant (I'm not even going to touch Stavis situation in Greece sad ).

It is a fact though that for a part time job it is paid very well. But that's how Dutch government jobs are managed: it's relatively easy to work less hours and drop only very little in salary. What you'll probably find, Bregje, is that if and when you'd decide or be able to work more, your salary won't increase very significantly.
    That's the drawback.

  4. Back home after a few days visiting dad. He seems to be doing well but one of his brothers has Alzheimer's and keeps asking how mum is. He's thinking of wearing an appropriate t-shirt explaining things when he goes to visit.

But it is good to see him doing so well.

Just came back from the hospital, where I had a liver biopsy. I've been dreading this for WEEKS now (since they were going in to fetch a piece of my friggin' liver!), but it went surprisingly smooth. So even though there's still no confirmation regarding the disease, at least it was less painful than I had envisioned. That made my day.
