It may have meant that, but he chose his words very poorly I think. In fact, I've played some Lost music to people who aren't film music fans, and they recognised it from the show (or at least they said it reminds them of Lost, which is close enough). In which case Lost may not have a recognisable theme or melody in the traditional sesne, but it sure seems to have a very recognisable feel to the music. My parents have recently began watching Fringe, and my Mum often says the music sounds like Lost.
I don't think you give enough credit to the "layman" when it comes to film music, I'm often quite surprised by people's reactions to the music I play, and the music they hear in films and TV. -

I won't repeat myself, i am passing to you what i found out in the classroom this year whilst debating with my students on their experiences when it comes to tv music in general, and especially after we've seen and discussed various fragments of musically-driven modern tv shows. Now, i'll keep in mind for this new semester, that obviously i am talking to dumb people in the classroom, monkeys that are ready to grab any banana i'll throw at them and cheer.Love Maintitles. To be fair, no one I've ever talked to has mentioned the music from Lost - but then I rarely talk to people about Lost (and if I do, non-film music fans would have little reason to talk about the music in the show). But, having said that, as I said a few posts back, I've played Lost music to non-film music fans and generally they seem to recognise the style. (Which is not surprising since Giacchino's music is a big part of the show, even if the "layman" doesn't realise it.)
So I'm sort of on middle ground with this one. I don't think the music is as noticed by everyone else as a film music fan would notice it, but I also don't think 10 million weekly would not even have noticed there's any music in it. Unless those 10 million viewers were deaf. -

!?!? What's that supposed to mean!? And that's a fact. The truth. Not some desperate invention designed to prove a point. And what would be the point of making it up anyway? I've already said I like the music in Lost, I think it's very strong. I'm just pointing out that because there is no actual "theme tune" like most classic tv shows have, most people would be unaware of the fact that the music's strong. The fact that you said that every single person you have ever spoken to about Lost has said how strong the music is - and you specifically said that these are people who do not like film music - suggests that if one of us is making stuff up to try to desperately prove a point that no evidence supports, it ain't me. (Love you anyway, though.

Did anyone else actually listen to the music in season 5? There's virtually nothing new that we don't already have on CD or new cues that are long enough to issue a CD for.
Jacob's Theme, the end of Some Like It Hoth and a version of Hawking's theme, That's all we need.
Bring on season six music though as it's up to standard and original again! -

When I rewatched Season 5, I paid special attention to whether there was enough new material for a CD release, and there definitely was. Certainly not as long as the previous releases, but surely a 30-40 minute album could be compiled. Is there not a new theme for Sawyer & Juliet in there that receives attention in multiple episodes?I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to! -

That too. There's also an appropriately dark version of Ben's theme in TLADOJB, but again...really short!
I think maybe 15-20 minutes is pushing it for length though. If it's going to be the usual hour twenty it's gonna have a lot of short cues or reused material. -

Do you know, the use of the "Bobbing For Freighters" piece in the S5 finale while they're assaulting the drill site, was that a direct rip or a new arrangement of the piece? I couldn't quite tell. But there has to be a way to include that tragic orchestral quote of the Life and Death theme that shows up right afterwards...my favorite musical moment of Season 5.I love you all. Never change. That's my real dig with season 5 - it was scattered with tiny areas of musical genius, but got weighed down by rehashed stuff (especially from season 4) or cheesy or irritating new music.
That theme introduced towards the end of the season heard a lot when they were getting the hydrogen bomb did my head in. I hate to say it, but it stood out like a polar bear on a tropical island.

Yes, that final rise of Juliet's theme at 1:22 is excellent, but why is the rest of the cue so poor?
I know Michael had to write the season five scores in one evening due to the crazy schedule last year, but when I'm asked to sum up the season five score in one word, it's autopilot. At least it wasn't a good season dragged down by poor music, but rather a bad season that simply went un-assisted by good music. -

Just for the sake of argument, what if he wrote it like that to reflect the dissonance and confused nature of the whole scene and the entire concept of what the characters were trying to do? The music sounds like it's trying to be heroic and failing miserably. Which is exactly what the plot seems to be doing at that point tooI love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to! -

Then it should have been more like Just Another Day On The Beach from season 2 and less jarringly out of key. Or time for that matter. (It probably is in time, but it's difficult to hear.)]
Let's just say if a season 5 CD does come out I'm not the first person to look to if you want a positive review.
A season's 5 & 6 and additional music from previous seasons CD would be perfect though.
