The phrase 'Mad as a Hatter' meaning someone is bonkers or doing something crazy has been around for a long time, since 1865 in fact, the term being taken from Lewis Caroll's ALICE IN WONDERLAND ( the 'Mad Hatters tea party' etc )

I always heard that hatters (people that make hats) actually got mad because of the mercury that they used in the proces. It was generally accepted that hatters were mad (they just didn't know why until science provided the explanation).
Lewis Carrol used the mad hatter name for his character, but as I understood it, calling somebody as mad as a hatter was out there before.

Well done everyone who said.....
FALSE!
The reason Elin gives above is one of a few possible explanations but it's certainly a fact that the phrase was in use before Lewis Caroll wrote Alice's Adventures.

My solution in my situation is rather easy. I fudge by 15 minutes. That way if I need to be there by 9AM I say 8:45.
