The upcoming sci-fi film OBLIVION (staring Tom Cruise) will be scored by Anthony Gonzalez of M83. This is the guy responsible for the last piece of music on the 6+ min trailer for CLOUD ATLAS. OBLIVION is Joseph Kosinski's next film (he also directed TRON). Interesting that he'll be giving another electronic musician a chance to score a major motion picture. I'm very much looking forward to hearing this.

    Here's an article about it.

I was really excited to see this post. I've always thought M83's music would work really in the movies, particularly something like Michael Mann. I really dug Daft Punk's work for LEGACY and I hope Kosinski's streak continues working with Gonzalez.

For anyone unfamiliar, here is a terrific piece that's been used here and there commercially (I thought the fanvid tracking into CET3K was pretty cool): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ5-vCsQXlM
  2. Funny, but that link doesn't seem to want to work. Had to cut-and-paste to view.

Some nice ambient stuff, but I thought that the vocals-like bits were some sort of interference.

I really like their last album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming, which is often less ambient then their previous ones. The track linked above is on one of the earlier albums I think.

My favourite tracks are the Intro and Outro, opening and closing the cd. Outro you may have heard already on numerous advertisements and timelapses, including this fantastic Yosemite timelapse. Midnight City is their most famous piece though!

  3. "White House Down"
    Harald Kloser & Thomas Wanker

Speculation on my part, but very likely -- this is the next Emmercih film, and the two have co-scored the last three or four. Kloser is also a producer on the film, like two of Emmerich's passed fims.

  12. Shie to Temp Score Mall
09/07/12 - Shie has teamed up with director Joe Hahn, best known as member of Linkin Park, to temp score Hahn's indie feature, Mall. Based on Eric Bogosian's book of the same title, Mall follows events that tie together the otherwise disconnected lives of 5 suburbonites whose paths intersect at the local Mall.

    I like your choice!

For a completely different (but equally interesting) take, maybe John Powell?

That's one of my favorite novels of all time. I don't expect the film to do it justice but it should be fun at least. In the past I would have said JNH should score it but I don't trust him anymore.

Giacchino would be cool but then it might seem too much like Star Trek.

Actually I still think JNH would be the best choice, lol. But he is probably too busy.
I love you all. Never change. Well, unless you want to!

Gavin Hood's last feature film collaboration was with Harry Gregson Williams for WOLVERINE, I don't consider it unlikely he'll get this job as well.
  14. Rick Clark's Twitter feed:

'It's rather nippy in my studio today, I guess it adds to checking over George Fenton's "Frozen Planet" score before it goes out the door'

Does this mean a release from Silva Screen?

It's not often I post about a title mentioned on FilmMusicReporter -- I just let people find that, but a new one caught my eye.
They are reporting Craig Armstrong will score "The Great Gatsby"..

And now, practically a year later, mainstream journalists are reporting that Jay-Z is set to score The Great Gatsby.

    http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=36104

So, what happened here? Since journalists often mix up the terms 'score' and 'soundtrack', it could very well be that Jay-Z is merely writing some songs while Armstrong is still doing score pieces. Or, Jaz-Z could be a soundtrack-mixer/consultant/producer like Mariius DeVries was on Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet. With the usually eclectic musical mix of Baz Luhrman's films, anything can happen.

Or, shudder et al, the journalists are right and Armstrong has indeed been replaced after the studio felt the film needed more modern touches and Armstrong's score ended up too 'classical'. In that case, this must've happened when the film got delayed with half a year a few months ago (it originally should've been released last december, I thought the delay was because of the heavy competition in that period), since the trailer that was already released back then still featured Craig Armstrong in the credits as the score composer.

EDIT: In fact, the recently released second trailer also lists Armstrong as the composer, which would indeed indicate that Mr. Z is merely doing songs.
  15. ^^^ Looks like in the end, this is turning out to be nothing more than Jay-Z being too stupid to seperate "score" from "songs", and that he sparked this by making a comment in an interview.

Anyway, moving away from that crap to new assignments:

    "Budda Eyes"
    "High Order"
    "To Die For Our Country"
    "Body and Soul"
(this one directed by Gloria Greenfield; no IMDb page for the film)
    Sharon Farber
Source: the first three are on her resume at her website. The fourth is in the News section, but un-named (at the time, which was mid last year).

  17. In a new audio interview with Harold Faltermeyer, he says he's doing a piece of music for the Red Bull (drink makers) hlicopter air show, which will be sort of like an epic more modern "Top Gun" type piece. It's a ten minute cue.

He's also scoring an un-named African story movie that starts shooting in about April.

  19. "Transposed Heads" (in development; no IMDb page yet)

    SPECULATION:

    "The Flying Dutchman"
His wife, Julie Taymor, is also developing this film. I would suspect she''ll be asking him to score it, too.

This is actually an old news bit. Goldenthal told me about this already in 2010, so it's been in development for quite some time -- maybe all the way back to the stage version they did back in the 80s. In either case, I'm looking forward to it.
