I've really been enjoying the music of Polish composer Pendericki lately.

If you like the dissonant side of William's Close Encounters or Goldsmith's Alien to name just a couple of references then you'd appreciate the music that may have inspired such scores.
Quite arresting, dark and disturbing. Yet brilliant! cool

But you must be in the right frame for it!

Unlike Martijn, tis a friend to me.

You should check out some Einojuhani Rautavaara.

Tom's recommendations are very good, Cantus Articus is probably the most accessable, melodic and eerie and I love it. My personal favourite is On The Last Frontier, Martijn hated it but don't be put off, a few listens are incredibly rewarding, IMO it's an awesome work, very dark with full choir and orchestra.

Ah, Penderecki; one of the greats of modern composition. Glad you're a fan!

Just played On the last Frontier by Einojuhani Rautavaara

Oh my god! Magnificent! A stunning work. STUNNING!
What a wonderfully rich musical journey it is. So many surprises contained in each movement.

Thank you Tim for the recommendation!!!

    You're so welcome. cool beer

I like your description of a 'rich musical journey' which is exactly what it is for me, a release of colours and imagination not bound by any images of film or otherwise.

And Japanese "noise music" is even worse. There's always something worse or more experimental out there, if you look.
