The funny thing is though, Thor, is that I will be joining you on non-alcoholic beverages, except that mine is a lifestyle choice, I have even pencilled in a date, June 28th because this is the day I get back from Glastonbury Festival ( give up at Glasto? shocked thumbs <--middle fingers wink ), quite simply it comes down to being fed up of being fat and unfit, it's something I've been unhappy in myself for some time now. Of course, like I said, fortunately, unlike yourself, I have the luxury of choice.

    Ah.....gotcha!

Interestingly, I was set to do the same thing once I had the lung problem sorted out. After all, I can still work out with the other chronic things. But MY lifestyle change would have been related to workout, first and foremost, and then some slight adjustments to nutrition (cutting down some of the chips, pasta and chocolate, for example). I would have kept the alcohol more or less as it was. But of course, all of that is on hold now.

Are you cutting out alco completely or just cutting DOWN?

I guess this is a poor time to mention the half a bottle of wodka that made my dim afternoon yesterday quite a bit more palatable? To my defense: it was mixed with a whole bottle of orange juice, so it was all evry healthy.

    And I feel incredibly fit.
Slightly dizzy. Headache. Light hurts. And those fucking birds outside should shut their singing the fuck up.
    And walking hurts.
    As does opening my eyes.
But for the rest I'm fine!

No, not completely, just seriously cutting down. I'll be knocking all the bad foods on the head too....pasta, bread, potatoes ( and potato chips, or as we call them, Walkers Cheese & Onion crisps, Quavers, Cheesy Watsits wink ), pizza etc and putting my energy into working out.

Thor hon you are heavy on the chocolate too as I recall. That sometimes has to do with the liver too. I hope it's nothing serious and everythong will work out fine! smile

As if all those other chronic thingies weren't enough, today I found out (after a second blood sample) that I have liver damage! Untill I've been to the appropriate specialists and found an answer (which can be weeks and months), I have COMPLETE alcohol ban! For those who know me, you know how fucked up that is. crazy

If you were allergic to strawberries would this be an issue even if you liked them? I think not. Alcoholism isn't necessarily being homeless and having to lose everything. I would suggest that you call your A.A. central office in your area. Someone will contact you and you can go to a speaker meeting and check it out. Get a Big Book and read it. Only you can decide if your alcoholic. No one else can make that decision. No one will pressure you. We merely share what it was like, what happened, and what it's like today. Thanks for your concern, but I doubt it is alcohol-related. It might be heppatitus-related, though. Both my parents had that in their youth. Investigations will show. smile

Hep is a bad one, if it's a certain type it'll mean the end of any alcohol related drinking.

Wow... interesting see Tom go down the alcoholic route. dizzy That didn't even cross my mind when I read Thor's post. Those Leffe Blonde's must have really kicked your ass, huh Thor? wink

Seriously though... Thor's right. Liver damage can be attributed to many different things and hepatitis is one of the leading causes.

I hope you get better, Thor!

Why give up alcohol? Beer is waaaaaaay too good! Actually, I just had a delicious Unibroue Maudite.

BTW, eating an excessive amount of strawberries day after day after day isn't going to kill you or get you addicted to anything but more tasty strawberries.

    :strawberries: beer

  1. I feel bad for having a Leffe Blonde whilst cooking dinner.

I am sure the liver problem is surmountable Thor. All the best to you.

Beer and wine is LIFE! I would be devastated if it were banned to me for a longer period of time. But let's not sell the skin before the bear is shot or however the expression goes. A couple of months I can manage. I'll just pretend I'm pregnant! :D

Sorry to hear your problems, Thor.

What is annoying me at the moment is that I am grossly overweight and generally unfit and honestly don't want to give up doing all the things that are bad for me. But despite going to the gym (something a couple of years ago I thought I would NEVER do!) and swimming quite often, the weight isn't going off me and I have come to accept that given how sedentary I am at work all day for hours on end, it never will unless I cut down on my food and drink intake. But I LOVE food and drink. So... is it worth it? Is it worth being fit and healthy if that means I can't enjoy the things I love? (Anyone who tells me I still can enjoy them, only in moderation... I only have them in moderation anyway.)
  3. For me, moderation was the key. No change to lifestyle, just cutting down on snacking, cutting out puddings, etc meant I lost 2.5 stone in 12 months.

It is surprising how much of a difference just cutting out stuff can make. As long as you commit to cutting the excess out.

Yeah, I lost 14 pounds in a couple of weeks once when I was ill. Sadly it all quickly came back afterwards!

The thing is... I don't really eat many snacks (a pack of crisps a day, chocolate bars maybe twice a week) and mostly drink in moderation (certainly less than the government-recommended number of units in a typical week, but I admit there's the occasional binge) AND I do exercise - not a huge amount, but more than most probably - so I don't really understand why I am still so fat... and still getting fatter!

Same thing happened to me. Before my health issues got really bad, I actually managed to jog a couple of times a week and maybe even once in the gym, but I still got fatter and fatter and gained 20 kilos in two years time. The only explanation is that I stayed still the rest of the day, and that I have these eating bonanzas during the weekends (where I go nuts in terms of unhealthy foods). I'm now at an alltime high in terms of weight, not far off from 90 kilos. In 2007, I was 70. There's nothing wrong with my motivation, though....only health issues beyond my control stand in the way.

    It's clearly visible in images.
