Can't really hear what so many people are raving about with Paul Cantelon. Cliff Eidelman, Mark McKenzie and Adrian Johnston have all written music that no Cantelons will ever be able to surpass imo, and they're sitting on the bench.

Well, if that's the way we should evalute music then no new composer has a chance.

No; it's that it's beyond my understanding why anyone would hype such a score and composer if it has been done before in the past WAY, WAY BETTER and since - imo, hasn't got anything new to offer at all; especially by people who are currently jobless or work on little projects just because they aren't part of the gig. I AM NOT SAYING HE SHOULDN'T WORK; but why all the fuzz is what i don't get? Why don't i see fuzz (for instance) on Adrian Johnston's score for BRIDEHEADS REVISITED from this year which is ages better? (again imho).

But i guess that's the way the rest of the world goes anyway.

I think his melodies and orchestration from EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED are still his strongest work, and a sign that he's definitely a voice we want to hear more of.

    NP: Waltz with Bashir (Richter)

I love 'Shadow Journal', from one of Richter's previous albums.

Trust me. This ain't an action score.

It's... not?!?? We are talking about Bolt, right?

Yes...and this is not an action score. You have 3 action cues total. 2 are virtually the same, and the rest of the album is just boring mickey-mousing drivel we've heard a million times before.

(Oh look, Powell's doing that thing with the flutes again, and there's the good old cimbalom! LIE OFF IT FOR ONCE!)

It doesn't fill me with confidence that Ice Age 3 is next.

Well, I'd like to say that Hancock isn't replete with action, either. It thrives on having one or two truly stand-out action pieces, and the rest is a lovely mesh of supportive material that enhances it, I think.

Bolt could be the same thing, just for a different kind of light-hearted fare. But it's true, I'd rather have Powell suspense than Powell mickey-mousing... hm, I guess I'll approach this one with an open mind then.

Hancock is better than Bolt. Bolt COULD be better if it had a longer release. This just feels like a pick-n-mix CD. Rather than a soundtrack it just feels like a bunch of cues thrown on a CD. No thematic development, no build up, no proper ending, nothing.

*sigh* Sad... I'm guessing the movie is probably filled with pop songs used to carry the major narrative moments, including the end credits, and that's another reason the album feels so choppy. Still, I'm anxious to hear for myself.

    Now I agree with you.
So you know for sure there´s more music IN the film (or at least more music written for the film, although non used)?

Let's just say I have seen a lot of clips of this movie.

Hell, even the two on the Apple website contain more music. Listen to "Animal Rescue". All we have is the ending on CD.

Bolt? Pure joy. Sure, Conan is a classic, no point in even comparing the two. But Powell's music for Bolt has certainly managed to put a smile on my face. I too will be praying to the Flying Spaghetti Monster for a longer release.

    P.S. I Love You | John Powell

Now this is a GREAT score. This felt a little disappointing when it first came out, but after laying off it for a few months this is really growing on me!

I wouldn't call it a great score, but it is very lovely and perhaps a little too catchy...

A prehistorical Powell but some Powellisms there that he (fortunately) improved and made better in the next years.

Yeah, too synthy for me, that one.

What-The-Hell-It's-All-Good-Fun mode for me is Evolution, Cody Banks (the ultimate in fun scoring!), and Kung Fu Panda.

Edit: I'm going to be honest here - Kung Fu Panda surprised the hell out of me. It was so much better than I could have ever possibly predicted. shocked

    More please.

Yes, Evolution and Cody Banks were a huge step ahead in his style of (action) scoring, while Just Visiting was like a first step.

    The Incredibles | Michael Giacchino

Now why didn't Disney shit all over this release? This is EXCELLENT stuff.

I imagine how it works is that the album gets a budget which the album producer then chooses how to spend. Giacchino was producer of that album and I assume Powell wasn't the producer of Bolt?

I have to say, I think Elfman today is better than Elfman ever was in the past. I love his current sound. One of the best around. I won't say "he's better than Zimmer" since it's all opinions (though clearly any right-thinking person knows that he is, by a considerable margin).

Really?? Hm, well, I'm actually glad there are some for who his newer style appeals, it proves that Elfman himself isn't the only one who has confidence in his current output. I guess it's just me who's not catching the boat, but I can live with that... I can also try harder to like it.

I do love a lot of his older stuff (Batman, Scissorhands, Sommersby) but there seems to be an assurance in the way he uses the orchestra now that is pretty rare among modern film composers. I think his two Spiderman scores are as good as anything he's ever done and I could listen to much of his modern stuff all day long. Wanted didn't get much good press when it came out but I think it's one of the year's best.

If it's "boring mickey-mousing drivel we've heard a million times before" then I'm a bit unclear why you think having twice as much of it would be a good thing? wink

Look forward to it. If there's one guarantee in life aside from death and taxes it's that Anthony won't like the latest John Powell score for a few months after it's released. wink

I enjoy it. Probably more than Casino Royale which never stood out to me.

Because at least then we would have slightly more good music. I want the full "Animal Rescue" cue, and the full version of "Scooter Chase." (I have a longer version than what's on the CD, but it's still not all of it). wink
