Would Goldenthal's style fit with Burton though?

Considering he was able to pull off two great scores for two EPICALLY crap films, I think it's safe to assume Goldenthal would be suited for Burton. He's Goldenthal after all.

Agreed. And besides, Burton got Howard Shore to write like Elfman. It's therefore foreseeable that he'd talk Goldenthal into cranking up something he could live with.

And let's not forget that little 30 seconds track from Demolition Man that has everyone thinking Elfman. Goldenthal could make any director happy. Well... maybe not Ed Zwick.

Not brilliant but still worthwhile addition in the Poledouris canon.

NP: The Final Option, Roy Budd
Kinda cute for FSM to make this the "final" score on their MGM Treasury box set. Boy it's been a long adventure picking this set apart, but I'm overjoyed by the quality of this last score. I expected nothing less from Roy Budd. Here's a composer whose amazing input was tragically cut way too short. Only the first two tracks of The Final Option have played so far, but I can only hope that the rest of the score lives up to their pure quality of catchy madcap fun.

  1. NP: Spaghetti western compilation

The treasures of this set are things like Nicolai's 'Gold of the Proud Ones', Morricone's 'Il Mercenario' and De Masi's 'Seven Guns for a Killing'. Some of the most spirited masculine melodies we've heard in film music.

Get the score presentation of Il mercenario! If that's not amazing enough, it come with the almost equally good score of Faccia a faccia on the same disc, as a bonus. Ged eeet! punk

NP: Gears of Wars 2 - Steve Jablonsky

It's okay so far. I'm hearing shades of his previous scores. For example, track 7 "Hold Them Off" seems like a bit part from Steamboy. As a musical score, it seems to be less derivative than his previous work like Transformers and D-Wars and Steamboys, yet contain more of the good parts from said scores. As a game score, it's much better than the work he's done for the Transformers game and Tiberium War. First impression though... it might change later.

Tonight I was Playing: Apocalypto (Horner)

I didn't listen this score since his realease date. More than a year ago???

Horner is not very good ,IMHO, creating sounds without the orchestra. But this score contains some tribal and dark elements worth to listen, and they are far more interesting than sacharine scores like the "piajama boy".

Debney or Zimmer could have create a better soundscapes, though.

    NP:Horton Hears a Who (Powell)

Wow...It's becomming one of my favourites scores by Powell.

Okay, the main theme is not so memorable like Robots or Chiken run, But it's full of ideas and energy!

    I love it!

(If I had Bolt I could say is the first Powell score I find Boring tongue )

Nothing we hadn´t listened from Powell before in the animation field, but a minor work by Powell in animation is still a thousand times better than the most inspired Newman in this kinda films (Wall-EzzzZZZZZZZZzzzzz, Finding NemozzzzzZZZZZZ).

NP: American Beauty - Thomas Newman

I'm having a great time here just listening to the more soothing and haunting cues of Newman's works and relaxing with a glass of wine. The American Beauty and Angela Undress pieces of this particular score are just sublime. Up next: The Horse Whisperer.

I wouldn´t say boring. Powell on autopilot maybe, but definitely not boring. Pretty good action cues plus a simple but catchy main theme.

  4. NP: Judge Dredd (Alan Silvestri)

Sheer Silvestri power! I love this soundtrack to death, even if it only has 40 minutes of score. I know of the extended bootlegs, but I love this short version nonetheless, definitely one of my favorites from the composer. It injects emotion and action in my head which craves for such a score from time to time.

If you mean, best boring score!!!! The movie was hogwash and the music didn't help. If you want to talk about anonymous score, this is one of the best example of it. Granted, there were a few, FEW, moments that showed a glimmer of promise, but overall, as a period piece, it failed. I'd take Trevor Morris work on The Tudors over this tripe.

Haven't seen the movie but on CD i have to agree. With very few exceptions, this sounds like the most generic period stuff i've heard in ages; Same goes for his contributions for "W". Can't really hear what so many people are raving about with Paul Cantelon. Cliff Eidelman, Mark McKenzie and Adrian Johnston have all written music that no Cantelons will ever be able to surpass imo, and they're sitting on the bench.

Love, love LOVE American Beauty. The main theme (of course) and that 2ndary fragile theme heard in "Angela undress" (if i remember correctly) are 2 of the most simple and beautiful compositions i've ever heard. Almost as good as Arvo Part's solo piano works.
