NP: Speed Racer - Michael Giacchino

Haven't spun this one since it's initial release and this time it's a lot better than I remembered. Still not his best work but there are some exceptional music written in this score. The big 14 minutes climax at the end of the album (excluding the cover of the Speed Racer tune) it magnificent with some SWON hints in there. But it's just massive with a impressive orchestra/choral closer that knocked my boots off! The only turn off for me is the ethnic wailing. I haven't seen the film so I don't know if it has a place or not but it's such a cliched device that usually irritates the piss out of me. I really don't like it in this score and not sure if it's even needed. Besides that, this is a pretty entertaining score with a lot of different musical ideas and devices thrown into the mix. The surf guitar sounds in "Casa Cristo" is most welcome. Groovy!

Ah, damn, you had a chance then. Was this also connected to your Japan visit?

Actually no. She's an Australian musician - the driving force of a pop group called Mozaika - and also writes in a more classical frame of mind when she can. This score was written for one of my student's films, and done in a slightly unusual manner - the score was recorded last weekend, and the film will be shot next week and very specifically timed to it. It's great to see young filmmakers putting music at the heart of their work like this.

I LOVE that score, it's Giacchino in fun mode. I even even love the Speed Racer cover. (Well, I'm not so keen on the 'Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer' malarkey to which I can only assume is taken from an original recording?)

I listen to it a lot when I'm cycling to and from the uni bar, nice and upbeat and energetic. punk

I think so. Now, while that last track turns me off I do like the way the original Speed Racer theme is used in the score!

The other score that said LOTR's is right for Shore cool

YES! But I didn't find out about it until after LotR started coming out. If I'd known about it before I might not have been so surprised by the choice of composer.

Kilar's demo was rejected reportedly. He hated the idea of working for three years from what I've heard.

"Working three years" deterred him? What was he after? A deal like the Almighty had? "Work six days, then take eternity off"? biggrin wave

  2. Kind of. Kilar never took film scoring really seriously and belongs to the type of classical composers who SCORE movies but strongly disregard film music as it is. So working on a MOVIE for three years would be something he wouldn't regard very strongly. Now if it was an OPERA, I guess it would be something completely different.

Exceptional... as in "great to listen to"? Or as in "John Williams' inaccessible-yet-masterful 'Treesong' "?

Very accessable! Get his EXODUS, it's available on the NAXOS budget label.

( Exodus was used in some Schindler's List trailers and Williams references it in the track Schindler's Workforce )

It is absolutely gorgeous. It's because of scores like that one that I keep collecting Mark Isham works, hoping that he'll do another one like it. There haven't been much, but they're goood.

I think it fits the Powell-in-love romantic style heard in stuff like Gigli or Two weeks notice and way more serious in I AM SAM. How is it any different than those firs 2 mentioned? Unless you consider them anonymous too wink For the record, i just love this side of Powell.

Have you seen the film? If you have, and you noticed any of Powell's 50-minute score in it, you're a better man than me! That's what I meant by anonymous. If there was no score at all, it wouldn't make any difference to the film.

Never has the word lovely been so appropriate. It's not big, it's not clever.... [Roger the camp alien]but it's sooooo lovely.[/Roger the camp alien]

    Stargate: Continuum Joel Goldsmith

I think I hear a bit of The Sum of All Fears in there? I sure hope that's a conscious decision, because it's a comforting thought.

Anyway, this is an excellent score and, unlike Kull, is definitely Joel's style. The action is a particular highlight of this score.

  3. NP: Legends of the Fall (James Horner)

Horner in sentimental overdrive mode! I love this and I love the movie because of this music and for the performances and cinematography. I cannot imagine myself a more romantic, majestic, sweeping and dramatic score for a film than Legends. Please excuse myself while I pick up my jaw from the floor while listening for the umpteenth to this glorious soundtrack, which made me fall in love with Horner, music-wise of course. smile
