NP: The Blue Planet - George Fenton

What more can really be said about this incredible score? It has to be some of the most majestic, awe-inspiring and goosebump-inducing music ever written for a TV documentary. I'm so glad the BBC natural history department realise the importance of music in their series - this one couldn't have asked for anything more.

Saw half the documentary over the past few months and I can't WAIT to get the score!

Only there one only thing worst than listening this score, and it is how it works in the movie.

There's no end to the amount of bad stuff I've heard about this score, and, given that I'm not a big Serra fan to begin with, I don't have it yet. However your comment makes me glad of one thing: that people are still listening to bad scores. Even listening to something terrible isn't a waste of time in my opinion, because you'll never know when a bad score will finally grow on you, becoming slightly better, and also you can do something else while you listen.

That's why I never get rid of awful scores like Diggstown or Jablonsky's Chainsaw Massacre scores.

NP: Death Note opening theme song. About to watch episode 16. I wonder what ways this show will blow my mind next.

I love it. Bold, masculine, shamelessly loud.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

NP: The First Olympics, Bruce Broughton
Typical Broughton fare, pretty lovely with a few nice heroic moments. Still, this isn't as important as The Ice Pirates in terms of new Broughton release.

    NP: Billion Dollar Brain
Enjoying this selection on disc 7 of FSM's giant box. So far the only major disappointment on this collection has been the waste of space that has been discs 5 and 6: The Happy Ending. Perhaps I expected too much from Michel Legrand after his amazing Ice Station Zebra, but Happy Ending turns out to be over two hours of 60's pop sap. I don't mind some light-hearted 60's fare when it's short and concise, but two hours of it is too demanding. It has some quite nice moments, mind you, but way too much of it is "source".

They are two different beasts to me and in their respective genres as good. But the question is which is better. And I still can't tell. Bangkok is better rounded-up and has a better theme (and not so much an MV anthem), but the action in Eagle Eye is more complex and fun.

I didn't find it too entirely terrible. Better that most parts of Vol.1 and 2. It's probably another one of those instances where you need to have seen the show to fully appreciate it. I assume you haven't watched it? I haven't either.

    NP: The Honey Pot.
Now onto disc 8 of the MGM Treasury. Getting close to those two Morricone scores! Honey Pot actually seems surprisingly good!

I have not seen the show, and I heard years ago Volume 1 which I found a little more interesting
The thing is, the first 20 tracks are hideous and the final tracks at last give us some thematic soothing music, but too little too little, it is not horrible but the first 20 tracks are dizzy

Did you notice on yours also that the actual track lengths of the 2nd episodic score on the CD do not match what's on the back insert? I want to make sure it isn't just my copy that's messed up or mislabeled.

    [Edit:]
NP: Pussycat, Pussycat, I Love You - Lalo Schifrin
It's been fairly cute so far, with certain pretty good moments, but I just gotta say the track "Cowboys and Indians Italian Style" is a superb pastiche of Morricone! Three minutes of unadulterated fun!!!!

    [Edit Edit:]
And the track "Have Chicken, Will Travel" was equally romping spaghetti western fun!

  5. NP: Air Force One (Jerry Goldsmith)

Very potent stuff like only Goldsmith could write!!!!!! As suspense / action music this is certainly one of his most satisfying works ever. And the rhythm... THE RHYTHM... it's relentless. punk punk If this score was 70 minutes long I would be totally exhausted before the CD came to an end. Luckily it's only half that length, just about right IMO.

I like when an actions score exhausts me. I feel that it's what actions music should do. Either on a pulse-pounding level, or on an emotional, tragic level. I'll reiterate that 2- or 3-CD release of the complete Air Force One including Randy Newman's score would truly be a godsend to many fans.

    2) Written for a movie shown to tie in with Las Vegas' Treasure Island.

  6. NP: Penelope (Max Richter)

An uncommon case where I find myself still listening to music from a film after spending days listening to it at the sound mix stage.

Next: Shades of Desire (Me-Lee Phang) - another such case, though the film is still being made, and I probably won't be involved with the sound mix

NP: The Thin Red Line - Hans Zimmer

It was Wings Of A Film live album where I heard Journey To The Line for the first time. At first I didn't care much about it - it was just one quiet track on the album. But at one point, I suddenly realized how great it was. Something emotional is building up and up.

And later on this soundtrack I found some tracks as great as (or maybe greater than) Journey To The Line. I love Light, Stone In My Heart and The Village - Silence. There are very beautiful melodies and emotions.

This is not something I play over and over almost everyday (like, TLK, Spanglish or Porco Rosso for me wink), but it's a really great piece of work!
