It was also a relief to me that violence and swearing was kept to the minimum level that was necessary for this picture.

Surprising to hear someone say that as this film is not for the faint hearted by anyone's standards!

The Devil's Own... Seven Years in Tibet uhm Some of the most unintentionally funny roles he's ever played.

In the worst Irish accent I've ever heard --> "Give me my money, Tom" Awful!

If you think back at it, there were less moments with the usual graphic Tarantino violence than, let's say Pulp Fiction had. But I agree that the violence it did have, was not easy to watch at all!

    Agreed.

That scene in the underground French cafe. Yeah, that's what it's all about.

I thought the opening scene was excellent too. Calm but with an underlying edge-of-the-seat tension until
culminating in the shooting.
Brilliantly performance by Christoph Waltz.

I would rather Pitt dindn't attempt any accent in Seven Years In Tibet.

Still, a lot of top notch actors have fallen flat on their faces attempting certain accents, Johnny Depp's "London" accent in FROM HELL and "cockney geezer" Bob Hoskins attempt at an American one in THE COTTON CLUB springs to mind.

As for bad actors look no further than Keanu Reeves laugh out loud funny "English" accent in DRACULA biggrin

As someone who comes from Northern ireland this accent was particularly horrifying. Any time he is asked a question he pauses, looks down and says "aye..." truly cringe worthy.

    Angels & Demons

Absolutely staggering. The first hour is as boring as ever, even though the characters are now doing both the running and explaining at the same time - and with slightly better haircuts. After that, snore-inducingly bad... but the final 40 minutes are laugh-out-loud funny.

Plus, only Ron Howard could direct the following two sequences as action set-pieces:
    1. A trip to the Vatican Library
    2. The announcement of a new Pope

It's essentially Mission: Impossible goes to the Vatican, with a bit of Thunderbirds and Star Trek thrown in for good measure. It is stupid in ways I could not possibly have imagined.

Very interesting. One of my friends told me that based on this movie, tamil filmmakers had made a film called Ayirathil Oruvan in the year 1959. Do you know about this?

The MGR starrer? I haven't seen his films but I do recall seeing some of the famous songs with him swinging by a ship with full gusto.

Exactly! MGR Starrer. My friend told me that he saw that film Captain Blood, and he was shocked how beautifully copied by Tamil filmmakers. However, i should give some credit to filmmakers because i say that was good adaptation from the original one. smile

Agree. Not in the same league as The Big Lebowski, which is their ultimate comedy. But I loved Clooney's character and Pitt was totally on the ball.

    I saw yesterday: Changeling

Another very good Eastwood film. Angelina Jolie's tour de force acting is duly noted. But then who wouldn't wanna play such a hopelessly battling against the corruption and tormented mother searching for her little kid who went vanished all of a sudden. With his last few films (Million Dollar Baby, this one and Gran Torino) Eastwood has become one of THE storytellers in Hollywood that succeeds to create intelligent and deep emotional films.

I thought the acting was the best thing in it. Clooney and Pitt are both excellent at comedy, and I thought Malkovich nailed it too.
  5. Anyone watch Daredevils: The Human Wing on Channel 4 last night?

Quite spectacular seeing them against the landscape to highlight how fast they go. The footage of the guy "doing" the Matterhorn (not shown in the YouTube clip) was shocked

    I watched this last night.

Hard to disagree with much of what you say but I did enjoy this goofy nonsense ( maybe I was in the right mood? ), I have to say though, that I thought Hans Zimmer's score was AWFUL! It made many scenes cheesy and laughable ( which admittedly wasn't hard to do ) hyping up action that didn't exist.

I don't much like the soundtrack as a stand alone listen either, Joshua Bell's violin solos sound a little too close to Vaughan Williams at times so just make me want to play real musical genius instead of a pile of luke warm noodling.

    Titanic

This one has been broadcast on Sky, Five and Film4 quite a lot recently, so it was inevitable that I'd end up watching it again.

Certainly far from a masterpiece, but it is quite an entertaining film with ever-watchable special effects. Horner's score does suffer from some bad edits and quite mixing, but it still works for me. (Though perhaps not the synthy parts. On album it's nice, but in the film it feels a little misplaced at times.)

I'm glad Cameron is returning to sci-fi though, let's see how Avatar turns out...

I caught it on Film4 last week and you're right, Titanic is always a very watchable film - and the special effects are still very, very impressive, especially during the sinking scenes. It was definitely made at the right time - there would be so much more CGI in it today.
  6. A number of specials/documentaries on The History Channel and "The Discovery Channel.

Watched on the history of ice cream, how it's made, shops that sold it in the early days, ice cream innovations, and even a tour of the Ben & Jerry plant. They even talked about how they had a Bring a Flavor Back to Life (or whatever they called it) contest to bring one flavor that was killed off. They have an actual, physical graveyard with tombstones with hte name of evr dead flavor. They brought the winning flavor back to life. It sold poorly, a few months later disappearing from the shelf again.

Watched a harrowing special on two or three families during a 1938(?) East coast powerful hurricane they never thought would happen. When an astute forcaster noted the hurricane WAS going to hit, his superior refused to believe it and declined to send the warning. Thusly, everybody was hit without a warning.
One family had their neighbor's son rush in and he said they were all gone. His entire family had been sucked out to sea -- only he was left.

    Another family...
The previous day, the father had a heart attack and was under orders to stay in bed and rest. About 12 hours later the hurricane struck. The storm surge was large, and the bottom of the house flooded, so the father, mother and kids went up stars. The house starts falling apart underneath them. Eventually it falls out completely, and a large part of the wooden second story floor, a iron pipe sticking up, and a small part of ceiling -- which they are all clinging to for dear life, is sweap out to sea. Guess he never had a chance to recover from that heart attack.

For hours they were pounded on the raft, gripping it, trying not to be ripped off or drown. Finally, it washed ashore. As soon as the last one climbed off, it slipt in two. shocked

Watched a special on the history of Rome, it's crazy-assed leaders (and sane ones) and how their civilization worked, what amazing buildings they built and how they did it, back stabbing, concuring -- it basically covered everything.

It reminded me of a fact I had forgotten -- for a long time after, and even during -- Rome was the only civilizatrion with RUNNING water. They even -- perhaps foreshadowing the future -- charged citizans for the running water in their homes.
