  1. NP: Flight of the Red Balloon (???)

One of my favourite films and scores from last year. The score consists of a single piano waltz - the same recording of which appears 4 times in the film. I ripped the track from the end credits. Nowhere in the film is the composer credited. A very strange situation, but I'm glad to hear the music nonetheless.

Looks like an interesting movie! I will netflix it.

From the IMDB thread for that film-
I too really liked the piano piece. For some reason, I couldn't find out on the internet what piece it was. I just happened to be watching a video on youtube and I recognized it.

I don't know about throwing around the word BRILLIANT with this score. Is it REALLY one of the best things Young as done? I don't think so. I wouldn't even consider The Uninvited to be one of his best horror/thriller scores.

I'm calling overrated on this one! Solid but overrated!

I wish you were right, but it isn't Consolation 3. The start could be Liszt, but the jazzy syncopations in the bridge of the melody suggest a later composer.

I see where you're coming from. But it's a matter of context. You seem to be putting more balance to this in relation to other, previous Young scores and that's just fine. But obviously different from our perspective, which - at least for myself for which i am speaking, is quite spectacular in the present day context of the wider film music outcome during the last 5-6 years which has been very, very disappointing in general; especially in this specific genre which has been dominated by cheap hacks and / or not particularly inspired, electronics-driven scores. Both approaches are fine, just different smile

^ But in saying that then wouldn't you agree that you are overrating it because you are comparing it to previous crappy scores in the genre? Admittedly, it's a good score but i don't see how your reasoning makes it brilliant!

No, that's reasoning your reaction smile I still think it's brilliant. All the musical elements that make this exciting are there, and are balanced, masterfully used. The choral work in particular is very impressive and the overall style is spot-on. Love it. punk

I think they're both good, especially War of the Worlds. All I'm saying is that Minority Report was PRIME Goldsmith territory, and a far better film than anything he actually worked on in the last few years, which is why I'd have loved to hear his crack at it. Obviously it was never going to happen, but as soon as the film was announced I thought it sounded like a dream Goldsmith project, and I still think it would have been.

I don't see what's so wrong about swearing. They're just words. The implication behind them may not always be necessary and/or too much, but the words themselves aren't bad.

If I were to say "Fuck you and fuck your whole damn fucking operation", then I can see why people might get a little uncomfortable. If I were to say "Fuck you and fuck your whole damn fucking operation wink", well that's just fine.

Agree with you there, mate. One of the most enjoyable of the last 15 years. This monster rocks !!

    NP: Alexander (Vangelis)

Well this must've been a massive undertaking for a composer such as Vangelis, who we usually don't hear writing these big thematic scores, even though it's mostly synthesized. It has its share of textural underscoring, but the themes in the bigger cues are IMO very good and well used. The heroic tracks with choir are right up there with his more known work, I like this score a lot, it's a lot better than the mediocre film it accompanies.

Battle Beyond The Stars James Horner

Such a fantastic raw energetic score from a young, plagiarising Mr. Horner! I love this score, I've even grown to like the bad performances and not-so-great recording!? (Although a re-recording wouldn't go amiss of course.)
