I think the attraction, except it being a really good piece, is that it comes right after the tour-de-force that Chevaliers de Sangreal is, so it really calms the music down and works as a soothing experience.

Probably right there. The attraction for me though is that it's just a very fine piece of music.

Hmmm... I guess "written by" might mean "composed by"?
The liner notes aren't completely clear.

There's a credit "written by Rachid Taha and Steve Hillage".

But there's also a credit "Music composed by Hans Zimmer", with an additional note that Rachid Taha is a "featured vocalist" on the album, suggesting that the credits for songs/score aren't separately denoted.

    I'm confused. confused ( <- See?)

Steve Hillage!? Cripes but that's a name I've not heard for many a year. The man sure could effortlessly kick ass on guitar.

Perhaps you might be able to shed some light on Carol Serling's liner notes for Twilight Zone: The Movie, in which she says "Many years ago [Goldsmith] wrote and composed music for the Twilight Zone series." Wrote and composed? What?

Mind you... it still works very well in the context of the BHD album. smile

My own favourite sound on that album is 'Still'. That particular thing Zimmer does with the lean string arrangement underneath the voice - haunting is not too cliched a word for it.

    NP: Alexandria (Sigle)

Speaking of haunting. Russians really know how to move the soul.

That's one of the most captivating releases MovieScore Media ever put out on release. Pure quality.

As for BHD, i consider it one of the most inspired, inventive and influential moments in Zimmer's career. Michael's right, "Still" never fails to captivate and awe me every single time i listen to it.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
  1. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (James Horner)

Aaahh... a nice soothing score but in the end a depressing one. I like it however, this has more theme development than Iris and is a more satisfying listen and the use of synths is a welcome one. And how funny, I'm just now hearing the 4 note danger motif at the start of 'The Funeral'. I always knew it was there, yet now it struck me as a little out of place in such a score. The piano cues are gorgeous: 'The Boy Plans, From Night to Day' love

Richard 'wrote the best track on Da Vinci Code' Harvey?

edit: wait, never mind. Damn dyslexic tendencies...

crazy "Poisoned Chalice" is by far better than the overrated and out of place Harvey's piece. (And it's the second best piece Zimmer has ever composed too.)

I never saw the attraction of the Harvey piece either. Think there are several cues by Zimmer on that album that are superior.

    Agree. shocked

Apart the very promising thunder in the opening track, the rest is unbearably mediocre.

I just wrote my review of this last night. While some of the action cues in the middle are OK, it is I think sorely tempting to be too kind to this sort of score these days, simply because it isn't as bad as something like Iron Man. Compare it with what this type of score COULD and SHOULD sound like and it's rubbish.

Yeah; James has a point with this here; we tend to have a different, lighter confrontation of this type of scores while on essence are as careless, auto-pilot-ish and sometimes enticing as other less-fortunate scores that get tossed; if you want to realize the magnitude of something like that, just think what a field day a composer like Broughton, Eidelman or Goldenthal (for instance) would have with a project as big as this.

I gave it more listens and I'm liking it better than I did on the first listen. But it still isn't very good IMO, though of course it's miles ahead of Iron Man.

I can't quite get my head around how much better this is than the film score. It's better than most modern film scores in fact.

I wasn't crazy about Da Vinci Code beyond 3 very good tracks, and I think this is a lesser work still. (And isn't it funny how just copying a previous composition, but subbing in a violin part for a vocalist, can get a composer so much easy acclaim?) wink
