NP : WE ALL LOVE - Ennio Morricone

A hit / miss affair with famous stars covering Morricone moments, artists include Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Bruce Springsteen, Celine Dion, Roger Waters Andrea Bocelli, YoYo Ma etc with Morricone linking each piece with music, my favourite piece is METALLICA's take on The Ecstasy of Gold cool

    Not even Wanted? That's like a massive Powell/Giacchino/Elfman uber-score.

It seems the game versions of films are getting the better scores these days.

Yep. I think more and more films are calling for less thematic scores and more 'ambient' scores simply because that's the style of many modern films (post-9/11 gritty realism apparently calls for a lack of memorable themes). Games on the other hand have always needed the music to be noticeable, especially the old school 2D games (I think most people can remember themes from Mario and Sonic!) Now that games are becoming more cinematic and being given bigger budgets, there is more need [or more availability] for high quality scores. And unlike many filmmakers, gamemakers tend to favour noticeable scores. So the end result is a score that score fans will probably favour over many modern film scores.

    I guess.

Alexandre Desplat - Une Chance Sur Deux

Whoah! I'm into my second listen. This is now my fave Desplat action score ahead of Nid de Guepes. Orchestral fury meets melody!

Pretenders like you-know-who whose idea of an action score is one that fills the entire sonic spectrum should learn from this man.

    NP: Star Trek (Michael Giacchino)

Ah, I don't know. I'm not very enamoured with this one. It just doesn't call me back to listen to it again after playing even half of it.

Can understand that. I enjoy it as a typical Giacchino action score, but it doesn't really give me an epic sci-fi feeling I was hoping for. Bit of a misfire from Giacchino dare I say?

A good score. Though unfortunately not a great Trek score.

Well, since the movie clearly is a cool teenage-aimed Transformers-like ride and definitely not a great Star Trek movie, i'd not expect Giacchino to come up with a grand awe-inspiring sci-fi STAR TREK score. smile

If Giacchino's only as good as the film he's working on, then he's a lesser composer than I've given him credit for. wink

You, of all, know better how studio producers and directors always get what they want mate wink

    Indeed.

There's such a plethora of GOOD game scores out there, and not just by already known composers; it's really worth the time and trouble to explore the genre 'cause it currently carries some very interesting scores overall, most of them even putting the average hollywood film score of today to shame.

Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (Alexander Courage & John Williams - FSM Blue box)

Ahhhh! The era of the superb thematic film score, I remember it so vividly. smile Courage knows how to adapt Williams' legendary music and make Sup IV his own score of superheroic proportions. The three themes the maestro himself composed for this turd of a film are very good. Especially the Nuclear Man theme is insanely addictive. I would say this is a rather interesting take on Williams' unbeatable superscore, with enough fresh and thematic ideas to make it to the end of a two-hour journey of nostalgia. Just not legendary enough to be standing next to the greatest of all superhero soundtracks but good fun nonetheless !!!! beer

EDIT: And saying I only bought the box for Superman II, this is such a cool listen, above all it's a fun score, without straying too much from the Williams template. I love how in the beginning of the score the Williams theme statements are present, though as time moves on Courage injects more and more of his ideas in between. Culminating into rousing adventurous music, the likes of which we just don't hear anymore.

I could actually spot it only during the End Credits but I wouldn't swear it is not in the movie somewhere.

I would say that this is one of the most underrated scores out there! "Statue of Liberty Fight" is up there with some of the best music Williams wrote for the original. Too bad this wasn't released separately because I know there are tons of fans who would love to listen to this score but can't afford the price tag of the Blue Box. Personally, I only return to Superman and Superman IV. I could live with out II and III and the TV music... even though the TV scores aren't bad.

I let this album play through as I hadn't listened to Stuart Copeland and J. Peter Robinson's Highlander's II & III since I bought the album, I quite enjoyed Copeland's effort but Robinson left me cold, either way, I'm not sure I'll ever bother playing these two again.

p.p. AARON ZIGMAN - Akellah and the Bee

A soft and tender main theme that gets repeated to death, various shameless Thomas Newman copy-pastes and several laid-back urban trip-hop melodic pieces a la Shearmur's K-PAX. Originality=0, listening experience on CD=very pleasant.

n.p. HANS ZIMMER and JAMES NEWTON HOWARD - the dark Knight

Like visiting a good ol' (loud) friend!
