Is it just me or is Bourne's influence on Bond, which started with Casino Royale, now truly apparent for all the world to see and hear with Newman's very Powellesque Bourne like score for Skyfall; drum, bass, guitar, heavy percussion with minimal orchestral backing where as Arnold's approach, which still incorporated electronics, had a far more traditional orchestral presence.

Again, it's really hard to judge a score on 30 second samples alone but that's the feel I get from Newman's new score.

I don't think it sounds much different from Jarhead for example, or his scores for The Debt and The Adjustment Bureau.

  1. Erik, with the 3 full tracks I heard I remember being glad it DIDN'T sound like the Bourne films!

Yeah... those three tracks were composed in that classic Newman style but after heard all the clips it sound a lot like a Bourne styled score.

I was going to avoid all clips and even the tracklist, but after reading a few comments intrigue got the better of me.

It definitely sounds like Newman. I don't have that much of his stuff, but it's definitely him.

Is it what I was expecting? No. It's far more rhythm based. Does it sound like a Bond score? No. Some of the quieter passages remind me of The Spy Who Loved Me, but the rest of it really doesn't sound like Bond at all.

That said, I'm glad it's something new. Arnold's sound is still good but I'd like a break this time around.

And screw this whole "prequel-non-theme" business. The "prequel" was Casino Royale. That was six years ago...we want Bond back damn it!

Man, it still feels like a lesser Arnold score. I wouldn't be surprised if they took most of the QoS score and temped it.

I agree. You can go back even farther (BEFORE the Bourne movies) with his score to Red Corner.

This is basically just a compilation of the same 30 sec. clips as on Amazon, right?

That's David Arnold's theme from Casino Royale.

    What a peculiar video.

And David Arnold's recent Casino Royale version was closer to Barry's version than ever! Either way, this means there was no tracking, Newman did conduct it again and probably incorporated it more into his own score. Relief, and let's wait till we hear the whole thing until final judgement.
  5. No, no. Thomas Newman didn't use his own version of the theme. He didn't even record one.

So do you know what the footage is? The theme being tracked over him conducting something else? Bad Skyfall people!

The music underneath the video is Arnold's version from Casino Royale.

  7. Yeah, that's what I've heard it is. Arnold admitted on Twitter twice that his theme was reused in the movie, so it was also reused in the video.

He said it had been licensed...but does that mean the CR recording was licensed, or simply the sheet music..?

It looks like the iTunes version of the soundtrack will have an extra track: "Old Dog, New Tricks" (1:47)
  8. So, forgive me for asking the obvious, but is there a video of a Thomas Newman orchestra miming to David Arnold's version of the Bond theme? That's a bit weird, isn't it?

No, the video Alan posted was just a PR video on how awesome it was for Newman to use the theme.

...with Thomas Newman talking about the experience of recording the Bond theme. With anecdotes of players while playing the Bond theme. Laying on thick of the awesomeness for him of conducting the Bond theme.

    (...)

Nah, it's tracked! All of the Bond theme renditions! Obviously! You don't need to have heard the full score yourself to know THAT! Bastards!

Apparently it was re-recorded. That's slightly better, but still rather disappointing considering the calibre of Newman.

Whether the bits you hear in the video are the re-recording, they sure don't sound like they are.

The video is surely the Arnold recording. Which is surely the best recording of the Bond theme since Barry's original. Can't say I am disappointed if Newman has simply re-recorded that arrangement since, well, it's barely altered from the Barry arrangement.

Hummm... I really love Carl Davis' recording of it on his James Bond Themes album with the Royal Philharmonic!
