Don't worry, I'll be judged during the second coming.

The Dark Knight Hans Zimmer & JNH

Since I use Zimmer, JNH & Jablonsky scores for my RolePlaying Game sessions, I play A Dark Knight at the end of every session. It is an absolutely incredible End Title track.

Agreed. Also, I put 'A Watchful Guardian' at the end of the album (from the second disc). I think it's a great way to finish the album!

After A Dark Knight? Interesting. I have to check this out.

During the past week I listened to Basil's The Jungle Book about 15 times.

A wonderful score with grand themes.

Also, an amazing film. By far one of my favorites that Disney has ever put out. For the most part very good acting (always a pleasure to have Sam Neill, not to mention his narration.), story, photography, and a great colonial and Indiana Jones feel. The animals are absolutely stunning as well.

I wish Disney would put this back into print. I believe a blu-ray release is in order.

np: The Ugly Truth/Zigman is one I've listened to, pondered a bit, but really wish I could see the film.

Absolutely! Thing is, I just don't want the album to end.... so that's another reason why I attach it to the end. biggrin

Someone over at Intrada said that Basil said in and interview he recorded 80 minutes of score for the film, though there is less than half that in there, so there is a wealth of unheard score waiting to be released.

I certainly hope we will all get a full release one day. punk
  4. Intrada may do it one day. There are few scores they could indeed expand from Poledouris and Conan is an obvious thing (that would need a serious remastering or a Tadlow treatment though), but also how about Hunt for Red October which misses large chunks of score on the release?

A frightening experience of Young, but effective at the same time

I find the Varese edition of Conan to be fine as it is to be honest, there are quite a few other scores I'd rather see get the expanded treatment than Conan. (Though don't get me wrong, Conan is a top 20 or perhaps top 10 score for me.)

There are still some great tracks missing from Conan, the Gladiator pit ( very Rozsa like ), the snake music, for those two alone I'd kill for an expanded.

I've not seen the film, so I have no idea. Regardless I'm perfectly satisfied with the Varese release as it is (obviously). I'd much rather see Wrath of Khan get the expanded treatment, and more importantly the remastered treatment. (And as far as Poledouris scores go, I'd love to see the same happen with Starship Troopers. lick )
  6. Except the remastering, the sound quality is pretty good on ST, that said, I am not a big fan of that score.

Well, we might as well join the mutual appreciation society because I totally agree with you.

But watch Trek III again and you'll hear a few magnificent cues that are missing from the CD release. Both scores NEED the deluxe treatment.

The sound quality on the official 30 minute album ain't bad at all, but the expanded bootleg/promo/whatever-the-hell-it-is isn't so good. It's one of the scores that got me into scores, it's a sci-fi adventure score... those are the words I long for in film music.

You're probably right, I haven't seen that film for quite a while. Khan always gets my vote though since it's so much more seafaring and adventurous than the second [third] film's score. (I much prefer Goldsmith's and Eidelman's Klingon music though.)

    NP: Superman - John Williams
John Debney conducting the Royal Scottish National Orchestra

Thanks for that thorough description, Erik. I never heard that one, but I love the classic Superman score with all my heart; I think I even prefer it to the original Star Wars. There are some things you said in your review that really wet my appetite for this rerecording, so I´ll check it out.

This makes me curious about hearing the rerecording as well, I've been only familiar with the original Warner release, the Rhino 2-disc and from the recent FSM box set. Superman is just superb and one of Williams' very best. I like re-recordings when done right, but I always find it hard to get used to tempo changes, different orchestration and what have you. But you can't go wrong with this music, if it's being treated with the respect it deserves.

    Glory (James Horner)

I don't hold this in the highest esteem as many other people would, but this is a very good piece of effective scoring, highly original, immensely haunting and very dramatic. If I have one gripe with it, it's a little repetitive in the thematic department, however Horner is more than capable to construct his scores so that it never gets tiring in one such as Glory. This comes from a time when James was at the top of his abilities and it shows. I'm also very happy with this short release, if it were any longer I wouldn't be able to enjoy it as much.
"considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G.
  7. It's not "highly original", though smile

When you watch it again ( and hey, it's not a bad film either ) just check out the music for the destruction of the Enterprise, Kirk : 'Bones, what have I done?' Bones : 'What you always do Jim, turn death into a fighting chance', the music accompanying this scene is a true moment of sublime Horner genius and it chokes me up every friggin' time.

That's probably the kind of 'boost' that I'm missing from my appreciation of this score. With Khan, it's full of those 'boost' moments (not necessarily of the same kind, but I hope you get my drift).

And it really doesn't take much more than a little conversation to push me into playing this brilliance....
