Michael Giacchino - Ratatouille
One of the best animation scores I've heard (and I saw the very good film as well). Started to listen to it after a friend of mine told me how amateurish does Giacchino sound (his words).http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Mark Griskey (with a couple of tracks by Jesse Harlin)
This one flew way below the radar. A shame considering how good it is! A wonderfully refreshing change of pace from all these austere, delicate European scores I've listened to lately. -

NP: Superman - John Williams
John Debney conducting the Royal Scottish National Orchestra
Thanks for that thorough description, Erik. I never heard that one, but I love the classic Superman score with all my heart; I think I even prefer it to the original Star Wars. There are some things you said in your review that really wet my appetite for this rerecording, so I´ll check it out.
This makes me curious about hearing the rerecording as well, I've been only familiar with the original Warner release, the Rhino 2-disc and from the recent FSM box set. Superman is just superb and one of Williams' very best. I like re-recordings when done right, but I always find it hard to get used to tempo changes, different orchestration and what have you. But you can't go wrong with this music, if it's being treated with the respect it deserves.
You know... my radio show is on a summer hiatus right now but I'm going to make it a priority to get a re-recording show done this week and feature the Superman re-recording so you can all hear it!

It will be back! I'm designing a new web page and creating new show themes (ie - a general film music mix show - sort of like classical radio - single tracks only)
BTW, I'm looking for someone who might be interested in producing an in depth film music analysis type program. You know, digging deep and dissecting a score. I've had offers from a few individuals (you know who you are
) but nothing has come from it! If anyone is interested in producing such a program send me an email.

Dissecting I do very well, but not so much in an analysis kinda way.

Me too!
Though, saying that, I did watch a program last night about the Royal School of Music in London, and one of the pianists played John Williams' Yoda theme on the piano and went on to describe why it's such a good melody (describing what chords we expect to hear after one set and how Williams keeps the melody fresh by introducing interesting chord changes one after the other, even employing a sort of Russian influence at one point in the melody) . Something like that definitely enhanced my appreciation for that theme! -

Except the remastering, the sound quality is pretty good on ST, that said, I am not a big fan of that score.

Hang on, the penny just dropped as to what you actually said there.
...not even 'Klendathu Drop'? Good GOD man!

Digging deep and dissecting a score with in-depth film music analyses I'm guessing?

But I wonder what type of analysis
And not even Klendathu Drop. It's a bit simplistic to me for Poledouris' standards and when it comes to one part of this theme, I definitely prefer its version in Les Miserables which probably is my favorite Poledouris score.http://www.filmmusic.pl - Polish Film Music Review Website -

This is, Starship Troopers is a sci-fi adventure score (and one of those scores that got me into scores). As I mentioned recently, those are the two descriptions in film music I long for.

Poledouris's best is I guess Conan the Barbarian, objectively speaking, but my favorite is Les Miserables

That´s a great idea.
Regarding your analytical program, I´ve just had an idea, maybe it´s something you want to think about; there is this guy, Doug Adams, who, as you might know, is in the process of finishing up his book about the LOTR score. He might be interested in doing some kind of program relating to LOTR which might be kind of what you´re looking for. Here´s his blog:

Exactly the same applies to this:
Stargate David Arnold
Ahh, I'm rekindling my passion for film music! (Not that it ever went away of course, but sometimes you get so bogged down in trying to listen to all sorts of new scores you forget to simply enjoy those that you love the most.) -

Fun listen on its own. Accompanies the film very well.
Definitely one of my favorite films. Jack Nicholson is perfect as always.

Yeah... I stole the idea from Doug Adams' "tech talk" segment on the FSM podcast. I like the idea very much and would hope to incorporate something like that into my show.

Listening to a random selection of TV main themes - and this is definitely showing my age in that there's not much recent stuff!
Battlestar Galactica - Stu Phillips
The Professionals - Laurie Johnson
Thunderbirds - Barry Gray
The Champions - Robert Farnon
Space: 1999 - David Wadsworth
The Saint - Edwin Astley
The World At War - Carl Davis
Little Dorrit - John Lunn
Chigley - Freddie Phillips
The Six Million Dollar Man - Oliver Nelson
Mission: Impossible - Lalo Schifrin
That list certainly gives a good idea of my viewing habits many years ago.
I'd imagine that this sort of a list would show up some interesting geographic (and temporal) differences!!The views expressed in this post are entirely my own and do not reflect the opinions of maintitles.net, or for that matter, anyone else. http://www.racksandtags.com/falkirkbairn -

In part due to the fact that TV themes aren't what they used to be.
