NP: Journey of Natty Gann (Horner)
There are a couple of tracks where I have to wonder if Jimmy might have heard a bit of Goldsmith's LEGEND. (Or maybe they both were drawing from a common source?) Those folky strings are a very similar sound.
Did I hear a " Great minds think alike" here?
A most enjoyable CD. This year has been great in old scores being released. Don't you think?
I do. Admittedly I haven't sampled much of the feast so far. My listening seems to have been concentrated on a small handful of albums this year (Cheri, Alexandra, BSG 4, etc).A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

Etienne Perruchon - Dogora Ouvron Les Yeux
I had this cd unopened for the last 4 years. Finally gave it a spin. What a fun listen! It's full orchestral with lots of children's choir singing in a fake language. Love it!
Jon Broxton's review is bang on-
Perruchon cites the celebrated Russian classic composers Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Shostakovich as his musical inspirations for Dogora, but in film music terms the scores it reminds me of the most are actually Basil Poledouris’s pair The Hunt for Red October and Conan the Barbarian. By combining the might of the vocal work of the former with the orchestral power of the latter, Perruchon makes each cue a distinct musical entity in its own right, with just one uniting element - the mixed voices of the Sofia Symphony Orchestra Chorus. In each cue, the choir contributes their mesmerising tones in a variety of guises, singing in a made-up language (a kind of mock-Russian), but nevertheless giving the album a palpable humanity – the tongue may be different, but the emotions felt through the performances are universal. -

Battlestar Galactica TV series (Richard Gibbs)
I like the soundtrack to the TV series that started it all, there are some wonderfully haunting cues here and the main theme heard in track 1 is great, whit that woman's voice backing it up. There is an amazing rendition of it during 'The Storm and the Dead'. Also the whole sound Gibbs wrote for Six is one of the more inspired choices. I love that part of the score. A rather interesting listen overall, only sad that none of the material here is continued in McCreary's music."considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G. -

I know what you mean by "that theme". It's a great tune indeed! Very nice moments throughout the Gibbs score. But I love where McCreary went with the whole thing though. Love it all!

NP: Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 - McCreary
My CD player is running hot with this one!
Both discs contain the results of an incredible musical evolution that peaks in perfection.
Not only can you hear all the character themes in fully rounded incarnations, you can now go back to all the other BSG albums and enjoy the development of each of these musical ideas from their infancy.
These scores for McCreary's BSG is the television equivalent of Shore's The Lord Of The Rings in terms of thematic development and depth of musical ideas. Although very, very different in style obviously.
For me Season 4 is definitely the very best BSG release. And I didn't think they could top season 3!
I think 3 is probably the better album for me, still. Here, at a double cd, there isn't exactly anything you would call 'filler', but the larger scale action tracks (e.g. 'Attack on the Colony') don't touch 'Storming New Caprica' and 'Mandala in the Clouds', and season 3 had the two best emotional setpiece cues of the series ('Deathbed and Maelstrom', 'Violence and Variations').
Yes. The cues you mentioned are all brilliant tracks for sure. Indeed the best musical moments of the whole series! But I love the whole presentation of the season 4 score release. There's so much 'bang for your buck' here! To many cues to mention but tracks like 'Diaspora Oratorio' (a gloriously beautiful piece!), 'The Cult Of Baltar' and 'Kara Remembers' from disc one. And pretty much all of 'Daybreak' on disc two is just a perfect ending to the whole cycle!
That theme Bear wrote for 'Caprica City, Before The Fall' and 'Earth' reminds me slightly of Goldsmith's theme from Alien. No bad thing there!
I'm wrapped in the whole thing though. Including his score for Caprica.
Cant' wait for Razor and The Plan to be released!

I still haven't quite gotten into 'Diaspora Oratorio'. It could be the (slightly pretentious?) title in part, but even in the episode, I didn't quite see what the hoo-haa was.
As I listen to the album tonight, 'Blood on the Scales' is a definite standout.

NP : THUNDERBALL - John Barry
No film composers do underwater music better than Barry or Bernard Herrmann, though I do find there's just a bit too much of it on this expanded release. The real meat is in the action tracks Street Chase, Bond Joins Underwater Battle, Underwater Mayhem & Death of Largo and of course, a big balsy instrumental rendition of Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
Still enough here to kick the shit out of any other Bond composers efforts. On Friday I ate a lot of dust and appeared orange near the end of the day ~ Bregt -

It reminds me of my other two favourite Beltrami scores, Three Burials and 3:10 to Yuma, but instead of the western influence, it's more of a Cajun sound. It's a score which relies heavily on atmosphere. -

WOW! Just, AMAZING. The landscapes are really gorgeous, specially in Skye Island.
I made 2000 km in 7 days. But it's really worth to do it.
Something new here???

The hoo-haa on McCreary's blog. He writes about it - and many of the fans praise it - like it was a major step for him compositionally. It doesn't stir me, either during the episode or now. I can much more understand the fuss made about 'The Hub', 'Kara Remembers' or 'Gaeta's Lament'.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -

It's time to get a DVD of this for me. The book the film is based on has a great title (In the electric mist with the confederate dead), the film is directed by a great director (Bertrand Travernier), and now Southall thinks it's the best score of the year!

I must admit, I had forgotten about Star Trek, which is also an album I loved.
I am very intrigued by the film, but it got some lousy reviews, including a scathing one by a man named Clark Douglas, whose opinions on these things don't tend to stray too far from my own. -

There are two versions of the film. One for Europe, and one which you can actually get, which is for American TV. I've no doubt the latter is the one that got the review. Apparently it has a completely tacked-on twist ending.A butterfly thinks therefore I am -
