  1. Hans Zimmer - The Last Samurai

I love it, great thematic material, good restraint. One of Zimmer's best. More coherent than Gladiator too.

Me too. Especially the Red Warrior theme with chants is fantastic!
  2. I am recently looking for more Japanese inspired music, which is why I listened to this and Tora! Tora! Tora!

And Timmer I listened to Wedding from You Only Live Twice. I think it might be my favorite track from that score except Bond Averts World War Three. beer

  3. "The Flim-Flam Man"
    Jerry Goldsmith

An enjoyable score. How to describe it? Well, it's got some Americana elements like Horner and "The Journey of Natty Gann", some harmonica, some Aaron Copland, strings ... kind of hard to explain since I lack the musical descriptive terminology knowledge.

FSM has samples for every cue.

"A Girl Named Sooner" is also on the CD, but I didn't particularly care for the samples. Will see what happens after listening to it on CD.

I really like both of these - but Flim-Flam Man is certainly better.
  4. I agree to a point. While I can see how Sooner might be liked, and that's it's not necessarily a bad score, I just couldn't get into it, and stppped about half-way into track 22.

It's definitely up there. Although he has so many amazing tracks spread out over his career, it would be hard to rank them .

Hard to say what I think about this. Most of the ingredients of a good score are there, but it just doesn't quite come together for some reason.

The best version I've heard of the main theme is from his 'Suites and Themes' concert ('The Motion Picture Suite'). Really benefits from a concert sound, what a fantastic piece of music!

It's the "Suites and Themes" album from the 80s. I'm not too fond of that arrangement, I have to say - he turned it into a carnival-style piece, losing the beautiful intimacy of the original (which wouldn't have worked in the middle of that suite next to Poltergeist and The Wind and the Lion, obviously).

Even though I've seen the film, I've still never had that strong personal connection to it that you probably need in order to appreciate something fully. So although I do appreciate the original score, I naturally prefer the concert version for its grander sound.
