Carl Davis used this as a major source of inspiration for his wonderful score to the 1924 silent version of The Thief Of Bagdad, which I was lucky enough to see performed live.

EDIT: Weird. For some reason this strikes me powerfully as something Tom could have said.
I'm having a sort of out-of-body déja vu. dizzy

You can leave me alone with the music for Sah Shahrya or Sinbad as Korsakov named him for hours! The music for the tale of two lovers is breathtaking. And don't be jealous! kiss

One could make the case for it being the greatest piece of orchestration of all time.

  2. A question to our more classically knowledgeable members. Who invented the dark action scherzo? Is it purely Bernard Herrmann's invention for his scores and classical pieces or did it happen in classical music as well?

I think that a good example for you to listen to is the scherzo in Schumann's Third Symphony. It has been used a lot.
