    Piano Concerto No. 2 Rachmaninov

I saw this played at the Proms recently, and it has since become quite a favourite. The third movement, about 2 minutes in and onwards, sounds like the inspiration for Russell Garcia's theme to The Time Machine.

    Soul cleansing music.

    punk

I didn't know that Rachmaninov was approached to write the concerto for the film Dangerous Moonlight? This would be a couple of years before his death in 1943.

Richard Addinsell went on to compose the now very famous piece.

    WARSAW CONCERTO

I didn't mention anything about Dangerous Moonlight! dizzy biggrin dizzy

Stravinsky also wanted a VERY long time to compose the music (more than a year, if memory serves), which was also unacceptable. I can't remember which film it was, though.
    I am extremely serious.

    MASSIVE ATTACK - heligoland

Few others who ever toyed with trip hop / dub / electronica ever came close to what this band, Lamb, Portishead and (partly) Faithless have succeeded in. This album is so musical it puts many other "popular" artists to shame. Groovy, mature, colorful and perhaps the most lighthearted album of the band in years, heligoland's a gem. "Paradise Circus (Breakage's Tight Rope Remix)" put every other dance song of the year to shame, by far.

    Warsaw Concerto Richard Addinsell

After listening to new scores like Inception and Salt of late, this is like a breath of pine foresty fresh air. Thanks to Timmer for reminding me about this one.

Is this technically film music or non-film music?

It's technically non-film music having been technically used in a film that was technically scored by another composer.

No, Roy Budd composed The Sea Wolves.
I'm not sure whether it was originally attributed to him, but he worked in some arrangements of Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto.

Technically it's very much film music though it's one of those pieces that has crossed into the classical repertoire.

    Right and wrong, Martijn.

Richard Addinsell wrote the film score to the 1941 film Dangerous Moonlight ( aka The Suicide Squadron ) of which 'The Warsaw Concerto' comes from.

And yes, it is adapted in Roy Budd's score for The Sea Wolves.

Ah! I didn't actually know that. smile I always thought it had been composed as a standalone symphonic work.

I did wonder why you mentioned Roy Budd and The Sea Wolves. dizzy

    A London Symphony Vaughan Williams

I'm listening to what is no doubt considered the definitive recording (?), the Hickox recording on the Chandos album.

    NP : SYMPHONY # 6 - Ralph Vaughan Williams

This too, is a Richard Hickox version. Such a shame the man never got to complete the RVW cycle by recording Symphony 7 : Antarctica.
