Some of them didn't get #2. How can this be? shocked sad

    About clip #2
I thought 2 would be easy to get. It's a fairly recent movie and the composer has gotten much flak within the film score community (not for this movie though) in the last few years.

    I know!!

I must have been lucky - the taste of some hosters must have coincided with mine. But I haven't been able to get a hint for most of these clips. Even with the travel theme stated. I'm hoping that there is a definite west-to-east link for each of the clips. The maps will be out to see if that clue was misleading!! wink

    cheesy
I was going to put them on google maps if I had time but doesn't look likely now. It still is predominantly west to east. You might just want to submit your guesses and see what happens. No harm there wink
Anyway if there's a next time, I'd like to put some Illarramendi

Bob sent his guesses just now and scored a perfect 12/12

OK... here are the final scores! It's another victory for franz! Excellent job, mate! A good performance by many others too...

    franz_conrad 37
    plindboe 23
    Bregt 19
    Timmer 15
    Bregje 14
    BobdH 14
    Antineutrino 10
    Tommy_Boy 6
    FalkirkBairn 2

The answers... (cd covers of the scores)

Clip 01 Gabriel Yared (Bon Voyage) Route Dangereuse
It sounds like a suspense & action cue with a classical style. That's something Yared does very well. The violin parts may be remniscent of his score for Camille Claudel. The movie is great fun-- double crossing, spies, war time intrigue... The trailer is here.

Clip 02 Gustavo Santaolalla (Motorcyle Diaries) La Partida
I thought everyone would get this. Those guitars and percussion lend a very Latino flavor to this. There are quite a bunch of enjoyable cues in this score.

Clip 03 John Barry (The Specialist) Bogota, 1984
The opening part (with the lush, sweeping sound... who else but Barry!) is the theme for Specialist (also used in Mercury Rising). The brass and tympani are so Barry! (does it remind you of Dances with Wolves?)

Clip 04 David Motion & Sally Potter (Orlando) The maze
A tough one. I put it because it's a favorite of mine. It's a fantastic cue... starts with mostly synth and then one by one new layers get added. It all culminates with a gorgeous theme on classical violin joining in. In the movie Tilda Swinton's character runs through a maze and makes the transition from year 1750 to 1850. Youtube

Clip 05 Georges Delerue (Joe Versus the Volcano) New York
A tense build up and then it erupts into a rapturous, romantic, gorgeous flourish. Georges, of course!

Clip 06 John Williams (Amistad) Crossing the Atlantic
Might sound unfamiliar. But I thought it could have been worked out-- it reminds me of Memoirs of a Geisha

Clip 07 Cyril Morin (Zaina: Cavaliere de L'Atlas) L'arrivee A Marrakech
Another favorite of mine. Cyril Morin isn't well known. But he's done some terrific work (check out Samsara too). There's something very distinctive about his gorgeous string sections with ethnic vocals.

Clip 08 Quincy Jones (The Italian Job) It's Caper time [Self preservation society instrumental]
Getta bloomin' move on! Cult classic with Michael Caine! Goofy and fun theme for the car chases all over Turin. This is the instrumental version of the Self Preservation Society song.

Clip 09 Jan A P Kaczmarek (Aimee & Jaguar) Berlin
Kaczmarek is another favorite of mine. This is a tough one but there's his signature most notable from 33 seconds onwards. A couple of folks worked this out! (Does it remind you of Finding Neverland?)

Clip 10 Marco Frisina (Giovanni Paolo II) Ritorno In Polonia
Emotional, expressive... it sounds very Italian. I'm surprised no one guessed Morricone for this. Marco Frisina is a church minister. He's also a veteran at scoring biblical-themed movies mostly for Italian TV. He's done a whole bunch for the "La Bibbia" series. This one is for the biography of Pope John Paul II (played by Jon Voight). Check him out folks! I'll call this his best score though there's stiff competition from another majestic one- San Pietro

Clip 11 Jerry Goldsmith (The Russia House) The Family Arrives
That sax player totally rocks! It's Branford Marsalis! Jerry's Russia House theme might be familiar to many... this final cue in the score features some terrific expansion of ideas. My fave Jerry!

Clip 12 James Horner (House of Sand and Fog) A Return To The Caspian, And To The Iran Of Old
Those long, stretched out chords are something Horner does very often. Many identified Horner but had a tough time with the score.sad This was a fine movie (adaptation of a book) with terrific performances by Ben Kingsley and Shoreh Aghdashloo.

Clip 13 A R Rahman (Lagaan: Once upon a time in India) Lagaan: Once upon a time in India- Chorus
There's a lot happening in here. The chorus singing in a foreign language opens peacefully but then there's a grave section that leads way to bombast. It goes all over the place before settling into chorus plus urgent violins. There's epic Bollywood for you wink The movie's great fun. It was an Oscar nominee in the foreign film category. BTW the chorus is shouting "Chootay Lagaan".

Clip 14 Laurence Rosenthal (The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles- Peking 1910) The Long Night of Dr Wen Chu-lu
Tough one! I though folks would get the Chinese connection at the beginning and then notice the bridge between that and the western theme and use the remake hint to get close. I didn't expect anyone to get this.

Clip 15 Hans Zimmer (Beyond Rangoon) Waters of Irawaddy
Zimmer of the mid 90s. You'll notice a far-eastern influence and a lot of synth. There's a moment towards the end when there's a wordless vocal and the synth joins in. That's distinctly Zimmer for me.

Clip 16 Ennio Morricone (Casualties of War) Casualties of War
Choral magnificence! Very few modern composers can do something like this. Ennio has many excellent choral works like this- The Mission, Vatel, La Casa Bruciata, City of Joy...

Clip 17 Bruce Smeaton/Enesco (Picnic at Hanging Rock) Suite from compilation of "Music from Great Australian Films"
This is a re-recording with a different arrangement. The original has pan-flutes played by Georghe Zamfir. There's no score release of Picnic At Hanging Rock except for this compilation of music from Australian films.

Clip 18 Thomas Newman (Angels in America) Mauve Antarctica
Distinctly Tom Newman! This is my favorite score of his. Youtube.

Bonus Clip 19 Jonathan Goldsmith (Such a Long Journey) Finale
Obscure score and the composer isn't known well. He's a Canadian composer and has done a lot of work for TV. This is his only release on cd (commercial). I was hoping folks would identify the Indian connection due to the the esraj/sarangi (the wailing instrument). It's a beautiful score!

Thanks for playing! I realize that I should have had more simple ones for folks to get started. I think Bob's and Peter's games were very nicely done-- there was a fair balance of simple, workout-able and hard ones. I'll keep that in mind if there's a next time. Atleast I hope this one will make you watch out for ethnic influences. And hopefully more folks will check out Morin and Frisina. Oh, have I told you that Frisina is awesome? wink I love Marco! cool

Hmmm....I know I didn't send in any guesses. Except for listening to the clips the first time, I simply never got around to it. When I listened to them, though, I got AMISTAD, YOUNG INDIANA JONES and BEYOND RANGOON right away, as these are in my collection and I listen to them frequently. Others I might have guessed would have been LAGAAN and, based on composer style, John Barry and James Horner (although not the scores, which I haven't heard). But that's pure speculation, of course. So I guess I just "lost" 9 secure points there, with possible extra points if I had indeed made the right guesses on the rest. Not to much brag about in any case.
    I am extremely serious.
  8. Ha. I should have known that Delerue. I knew I'd heard that one before.

As for the ones I don't know, I think ORLANDO just went on the list of things to find. Thanks for getting this one into the game!

I'll put together my clips tonight. I think there'll be 13 of them, with a bonus cue.

Great game BhelPuri, and I enjoyed reading your descriptions. I'm glad I picked out a couple of the difficult ones, like Rahman's wonderful track, though I feel devastated that I didn't get the "Picnic at hanging rock" one, as it's one of my girlfriend's favorites, and she plays it all the time. I think if it had been the original one with Zamfir performing, I would have picked it up.

Also glad that I picked up on Barry, Delerue's and Newman's style, though of course these guys have some rather unique styles so perhaps that's not something to be too proud of.

    Peter wink
  10. Great set of clips, BhelPuri. Obviously you put a lot of effort into this set. Thanks.

Looking at the results, I've only really heard 4-5 of these scores so I don't feel too bad about my poor showing this time. Clip #2 was really familiar, as was clip #18.

Hopefully, Michael's tango game will restore some of my credibility...

That would have put you close to Peter and Bregt with a very good score! You really should try to send your answers plus guesses for future games. I know you'd have got Lagaan (I did see your posts in FSM about it) plus anything John Williams smile I doubt if anyone knows more than 3-4 cues at first. Most of the fun (atleast for me) is in getting the ones I don't know.

The one I currently have is just recorded from the movie, plus it has some classical tracks that was used. But since the music in the movie was often playing without any dialogue or SFX it works pretty much as a real score release.
