I don't mind fresh new approaches but hearing that "Main Theme" doesn't fill me with confidence. For me, that sort of composition sounds more out of place then something along the lines of a Kamen styled score.
Well, obviously. But wouldn´t you at least agree that this is better than hard rock?

Are we sure that there isn't any hard rock in THIS new score? It's all the rage!

Ralph... I didn't resort to digs and insults so why did you have to. Anyway, I'll just be ignoring your most recent comments because I'm tired of you getting all pissy anytime I respond to one of your posts. And if someone else had of written what you did I would have said the EXACT SAME THING. I don't seek you out and plan an attack. Your not that important to me.
Like I said, no harm done. Where you get that insult and pissy thing, though, I don´t understand. Probably a sign of our different sense of humour, then.

    Great. beer

Now, with that stuff out of the way, back to business.

No, we can´t know what´s in the score and what´s not. All I can say is that, even for a hard and bloody retelling of Robin Hood, I still prefer a theme inspired by Zimmer´s Chevalier to a theme inspired by, well, hard and bloody rock, as much as you prefer an adventure style classic theme.

As I said, I love classic scoring, and I love adventure style, I just don´t need it in a Ridley Scott film. Just because it´s Robin Hood, it doesn´t automatically scream for spirited adventure. That movie with Patrick Bergin didn´t, Robin of Sherwood certainly didn´t. The new BBC series however, did. Have you listened to Andy ... Lane(?)´s score. That was a nice return to classic style. Probably not inspired enough for you wink , but, at least, classic. You can listen to it here, if you want to:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltm32akXRYY

I´m not against adventure scores in modern movies, that has nothing to do with it. Pirates of the Caribbean or Prince of Persia would certainly be great modern adventure movies where such a score would (have) be(en) great. On the other hand, I´m okay with what Zimmer/Badelt have done with it, I love what Zimmer did for AWE, and since I love HGWs adventure scores, I guess I will also like PoP. Maybe you´re lucky and we get a Sinbad style score for that one (well, in case you liked Sinbad, of course).

But Ridley Scott is a man blessed by his talent to make extraordinary movies. And I´m very optimistic his Robin Hood will be - at least - a well-crafted movie. Scott doesn´t do spirited adventure. If you look at 1492 and compare it to the Columbus movie of the same year, I find it a blessing that Scott chose Vangelis. As much as I love Eidelman´s score, 1492 would have drowned in a score like that.

We have to see the movie, of course, to see what would have worked better, but for now, I think I´m very okay with what I can listen to at the homepage.

what is the reason, why most of the filmscore fans are expecting, that the style of the new score HAS TO BE like the kamen score?

What I would like is less modern electronic drone with generic writing and themes and find a more competent composer who has the symphonic chops to write striking, memorable material and not just rehash Chevalier in it's basic form.

What I'm also afraid of is Streitenfeld or Ridley Scott himself coming up with some lame excuse that Robin Hood doesn't deserve a full character theme because doesn't earn it until the end of the film. That's just silly non sense. I didn't buy it in Casino Royale (no Bond theme until the end of the picture) or in Star Trek (Courage's fanfare used at the end of the film.) This trend of getting away from full bodied thematic symphonic film scoring is disturbing which is why I would cheer for something along the lines of Kamen's Robin Hood and less Zimmer's Chevalier.

BTW, would any be against Streitenfeld doing more of a Gladiator score. That definitely had an upbeat, heroic almost swashbuckling theme (especially during The Battle) that didn't feel out of place during such a serious, Oscar winning film.... the only thing sounding out of place was the SOUND of Zimmer's synth overlayed orchestra.

There's a time for Kamen-style adventure histrionics and there's a time for other approaches. Easy as that. It's all on a film-to-film basis.

That said, Kamen's score would sound quite oldfashioned today and wouldn't connect well with mainstream Hollywood films (not even adventure films) and audiences. They simply don't make adventure films that way any more.
    I am extremely serious.

Fortunately....Prince of Thieves, watched today, is a joke. Time has been cruel to that film.

    Really?
    I'm just annoyed by Kostner.

But that's pretty par for the course.

I find myself -reluctantly (because I wish it weren't so)- agreeing with Erik that full-bodied thematic scores simply aren't fashionable these days. I see absolutely no reason for the absence of a score that can both be dark, realistic and thematic (and adventurous).
Williams did it. Goldsmith did it. Poledouris did it.
    And they all worked!

That it wouldn't be the spirit of the times seems a feeble argument to me, moreover because we see most blockbusters actually being remakes. That it is commercially more viable as we see YouTube remixes made by 15 year olds putting hardrock against Star Wars scenes as "cool", is far more the issue here: the general directive On Holywood High apparently has gone out that a score should not detract from the thunderous visuals OR the songs. It's a commercial decision (and in that sense it is a sign of the times, obviously).

I can't fault the executives for thinking commercially.
But I do regret that as a primary creative motivation.

There's a new clip from the Robin Hood film, with score by Streitenfeld - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLUOZ7ysjeo

The music sure ain't no Michael Kamen but it certainly doesn't sound like the crapfest that was expected... quite orchestral and good use of brass and strings from what is heard. I hope the rest of the score is good too... looking forward to the soundtrack now.

Sounds good, but it's just a fragment, very forgettable. Looking forward to the full score.

The movie sure does look like Gladiator 2 !

  3. Well, it most certainly seems that Scott shot a sequel to Kingdom of Heaven (you can easily watch them back to back, chronologically) with a Gladiator as the main star.

Since I love both films dearly, I have no problem whatsoever with it. ^^

I´m very much intrigued by the whole legend, especially how it got changed over and over again. I love its ability to be versatile and to be adapted into very different styles. Just take Errol Flynn, Disney´s animated version, Mel Brook´s movie, "Robin of Sherwood" from the Eighties, the films with Costner or Patrick Bergin ... They couldn´t be more different from each other, and still each of it works perfectly.

I do not expect "the definitive RH", I expect "Scott´s take on RH", and I´m certain he will deliever. Point is, I don´t even expect an action extravaganza like the trailers are promising. I think we will see more politics and drama, and I can´t wait to see it.
