In the name of the father

Brilliant movie. Difficult not to get affected by it.

    My rating: 9

  1. Ha, I saw that one (again) just last week. Brilliant flick indeed. Noteworthy also for the part of Emma Thompson, she's downright fantastic.

And the few songs are brilliantly chosen for the scenes they accompany.

  2. I've not seen it yet but is there really a film called The Beaver starring Jodie Foster? The subject matter isn't going to be what I'm hoping it will be, is it?

Not if it's Jodie Foster it won't.

it's about a man who loses his sanity and finds a beaver puppet in a trash somewhere, and suddenly it becomes apparent for him that it's easier to communicate using the beaver than himself (sort of a schizophrenia state of mind)

It sounds a whole lot worse the way I describe it, but the trailer sure does appeal to me

    The fall (trailer)

Weird but visually stunning movie. Was Krishna Lévy's score never released? I noticed several moments of great music, and it's a score I'd like to get my hands on.

    My rating: 6

  4. It's an interesting film... not quite great, but certainly interesting and visually-stunnng.
Krishna Levy's score has not been released, I understand. Although there is a bit of temp trackery going on - an Umebayashi piece called 'Polonaise' from 2046 was used quite early on as the basis for a cue, for example.

Indeed, I wouldn't call it great either. It seemed a bit random while watching it, though I do understand that much of it was symbolism that you have to think a bit about before you realize what the movie was about.

Yep, temp-tracking aplenty. Beethoven's Allegretto from symphony no.7 was featured prominently in the movie, but was also clearly used as inspiration for some of Lévy's music. Some pieces really impressed me though. I'm sure it would make a terrific album, and it's a shame that such an entertaining adventure score hasn't been released.

    FAST FIVE

The most fun I've had in a long time... Reminds me of the great time I had when I first saw T2 in '91... Jesus this is seriously good fun, great sympathetic characters, heartfelt moments, genuine old-school action and stunts, real cars getting wrecked !!!!! Hands down the best film in the series.

    And the score: rolleyes

  5. Oh and this one's for Tim:

Slipstream was okay because I had to watch it with an 80s mindset, so in that way it became fairly watch-able, even though I know deep down it's a bad film. I'll just let it fade from memory, apart from Elmer's wonderful score of course.

plus make sure you stay till the middle of the end credits wink

but indeed, finally a movie that does its stunts in old school fashion, meaning the car stunts and collisions are real (not like say Fast and Furious 4)

  7. I've not long finished watching Agents of Secret Stuff on YouTube. I felt I was 20+ years too old to watch this 35-minute movie. Funny in bits, but acting was very amateur-ish. The makers should be very grateful they have the talents of George Shaw composing for them.

The score's killer on album. Is it badly mixed in the film or you didn't like it on album either?
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

To me, the score is really good mixed in the film. The last action sequence (the whole vault heist and chase) is perfectly scored, the music elevates the already spectacular footage.

  8. David is watching Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, arguably the most satisfying of the Indiana Jones scores?

Just about to see the scherzo...

The movie kicks ass, but as always you put any score from Tyler underneath it and it works just as well. Why this guy even bothers writing new stuff amazes me. Apart from a few moments of calmer music during the character moments, I seriously didn't notice any kind of music playing. It was THAT memorable... sad

  10. It is typical Tyler - and I really like it. Typical Tyler-isms both in the action scoring and the quieter passages. I've accepted a long time ago that he'll probably deliver the same time and time again And that is fine because when he is good he kicks ass!

  11. I must be the only one who remember when he made dramatic scores like Frailty. I never expected him to become one of the biggest action composers.

Same here! I find his action scores samey and tedious.

So would I. It's odd that Michael Bay inspires extreme reactions in me. There are a couple of his movies that actually, I think are excellent popcorn entertainment (The Rock and Transformers) and yet lots which are just appalling (Bad Boys, Pearl Harbour, Armageddon, Transformers 2). Nothing in between.

I'm glad we agree, though I'd put The rock at rock bottom. I can't imagine a movie more atrocious. Though Face-off comes close.

I find the Transformers movies mildly entertaining, but that's exclusively because of the CGI.

I'm with Peter, The Rock, Face Off are bottom feeders, then I agree with James, Armageddon, Bad Boys, Pearl Harbour............

Actually, NONE of his films are good.

  12. Face/Off isn't a Michael Bay movie though.
