Knowing

The first time I watched it I rated it a 6. This time a 7. I think it's highly memorable, especially
since the Earth gets snuffed off at the end. That's not something that happens often. Usually some hero saves the world just in the nick of time.
Beethoven's 7th symphony was also used to great effect.

1. I hate that people says that the ending is ridiculous, if the whole film was building for that ending.
The disaster scenes with the train and plane are impressive
I watched it too! But I didn't watch the singing. Just watched the voting. How gay is that?!?

Invictus

I liked this - it's a well-made feel-good film. Everyone involved in it did a good job. But as a piece of drama, I'm not sure - there's never a sense that anything is a struggle, everything seems to come so easily.

The Ring

For some reason I expected this to be good. It wasn't.

Sneakers

Now, this I love. Have watched it several times, but not for a few years till today. One of the best films of its type. Wonderful score by Horner - one in which so many of his frequently-used devices originated.

The winning song from Azerbijan was appalling.

A nutty performance from Moldova was my choice to win it and the Irish entry from pop egits JEDWARD was ermmm...very catchy, sounded like a song that Katy Perry would sing.

Moldova, was that the country with the pointy hats, trumpets and unicycle?

What a freak show cheesy
waaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! Where's my nut? arrrghhhhhhh
4. I rather liked the Bosnian entry. smile

Totally.

Though I remember watching it in the past and the voting is usually the best part.

Indeed.
I think people got annoyed because of the aliens and religious stuff. Personally I thought the ending was great. Especially when he's driving to his parents and everyone is in a panic since the world is about to end and Beethoven is playing. Kinda makes it sadder in a way because one thinks about how this music will be lost as well when everything is destroyed. What I found most amazing was the scenes when the Earth got burned off at the end. The plane crash was good too; there's just a silly movie mistake I noticed when I first saw it and that's when the police man is looking in horror in the wrong direction when he first sees the plane.
Yeap, that's the one!

I agree with Alan & Peter, it's the voting that is most fun and it's also 99% predictable.

Nor me. Can't be bothered to start watching again, actually. It's been cancelled in the US, hasn't it?
6. Yes, it has been cancelled. It's a shame it is finishing.

I'm watching it now and it just reinforces how much I enjoyed it before.

You did? I didn't, though it's been so long now, I can't remember why!
7. The thing I like about it is the world they live in and some of the ideas. Some of he storylines are a bit corny though.

8. Watching an old episode of Star Trek at the moment. This one is from the second season and so it is a bit ropey...but the music is still excellent (I think a lot of it is tracked from other episodes.)

Pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2 and 3

It's funny how sequels tend to throw more and more action in every time, yet they become duller and duller. Perhaps there's a lesson to be learned here. That said, it's not like there was a huge difference between the movies. All three movies are rather stupid, but they have their laughs and occasional enjoyable moments. I'd rate them something like:

POTC1: 6
POTC2: 6
POTC3: 5

It's funny how all three scores have blown me away though. POTC1 introduced some hugely entertaining themes, that have become famous even among non-filmscore fans. POTC2 introduced the wonderful Davy Jones theme and the theme for the Kraken. And the third one introduced the 'Hoist the coulors' theme, the extraordinary love theme, the 'Up is down' theme, and some great standalone cues. A disappointing surprise that the 4th installment didn't do anything for me.

I thought the first one was great! I've probably watched it three or four times. The second, not so good - the third, awful! I would rate the scores in reverse order to that. (Hopefully that means the fourth film is good, since the music's not.)

I prefer the first as well, but in comparison I don't think it's that much better than the second one. The third one is certainly the worst, but I think it had some fun moments. They threw way too much action into the scenes though, and the maelstrom action scene at the end was so over the top it became an embarrassment.

People who've seen the 4th say that it's smaller though, with a more simple storyline, and from what I hear it might be as good as the first one. In any case, it's not a franchise I care enough about to go and see in the cinema. I'll rent or download it when it becomes available on dvd.

Pirates 4

Pretty good, actually. Far better than the third. Quite witty. Worst thing by far was the score, easily the worst of the series and one of the worst I've ever heard in terms of how the film was spotted. There is wit inherent in parts of the script and in all of Johnny Depp's performance which is completely undermined by the vacuous, incessant and incredibly loud music which plays from the first second of the film to the last, seemingly placed completely at random, with themes from the earlier films popping up at places they simply did not belong. Hardly any of the guitar music from the album is in the film.
9. I am guilty of continuing to buy music to a movie just to have the set (though I can't think of an example at the moment) but I not bother with this 4th pirate movie music.

I could take or leave the album to be honest. It's in the film where its folly is revealed. I have no idea if Zimmer actually had anything to do with it at all, or if this is just one of those times when his name's on the credits despite not doing anything, but if he did, then shame on him.

Zimmer's getting bored lately or is it my idea? He only delivers for larger projects, like Inception.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.
10. Wasn't Zimmer going to retire at one point? (E.g. after Black Hawk Down, or something?) And then he ended up doing more scores than ever? Perhaps the creative spark does not come often for him, or it feels too much like trying to solve the problems he solved 20 years ago?

I guess the money comes too easily for him to quit. You can tell which scores he puts the effort in to - I'm sure for each of them he makes more money than most of us earn in a decade, so it's a shame he doesn't just concentrate on them.
