I enjoyed this one far more than I thought I might!
It's visually beautiful. Absolutely stunning photography and sets: a great update of the old cyber-environment.
Blah plot, but all the fun elements combined makes that take a firm backseat anyway, so why carp?

Jeff Bridges seems to be channeling The Dude most of the time, but it's great seeing him in the role...and his cyber-counterpart is incredibly well done. Really. Some of the very best animation/CGI I have ever seen.

I'm still continuing with watching older 'B' movies. This one had holes but held my attention. Keep in mind that many of these are available for $1 from Alpha Video or even free on the internet archive.

Music and Movie together make for one of the most spectacular audio-visual treats of the previous year.

What's equal this year i'd say it's HANNA with music by the Chemical Brothers.

Interested to hear your view on this one.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Haven't seen the film so I'm not sure how the music interacts with the viz but unlike Tron: Legacy the Hanna album is pants! Even if you are an electronica fan it's a miserable listen.

  2. I thought that the music in Hanna was very distracting, was only a bunch of sound effects. But, the Hanna theme is nice.

I got my copy today, includes a 24 page booklet...nice! cool

    Martijn,

You may find this interesting, it's not great quality but that's all there is unfortunately...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v2OpMxYklQ

And also this, MR James audio story in 3 parts...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m21vFNRx … re=related

According to the booklets notes there was another televised version of the play done by Yorkshire TV 'Plays For Pleasure' ( 1979 ) in a "modern" setting with a female protagonist ( Jan Francis ) and an American-accented Karswell ( Iain Cuthbertson......and what a mistake that must have been with Cuthbertson's wonderful Scottish accent ). I couldn't find any sign of this on youtube.

  3. My morbid curiousity got the better of me and I finally watched Star Trek V for the first time. Kids, do not try this at home. Worst Star Trek movie ever! I watched Star Trek VI the day after and was blown away by how much better it was. Those two films aren't even the same league.

I like Star Trek V very much! It's a true Trek film and stays true with the original mission of the Enterprise... "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before." While the special effects are not up to the standards of the other films (ILM was busy on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Ghostbusters II) the story itself is really strong and the interaction between the three main characters is, as with all the flms, fantastic... but I find that the bond between them is the strongest in this film. And of course we have Jerry's incredible music!

The film isn't up to Wrath of Khan standards but I like it. As for Trek VI... indeed... that is a fantastic film and with Nicholas Meyer back in the director's chair how could you go wrong?

  4. Ugh, the effect were terrible. I was not impressed at all by the story, though. It was a half hour before the big three even left their pointless camping trip to get back on the Enterprise. They get to the planet with the problem, treat us to another 15 minutes of pointless run-around, go back to the ship, more pointless run-around, get to glowy blue planet, meet the least explained creature ever and escape. Done. That movie could have been a 1/2 hour episode. It would have been better that way. I love Kirk, McCoy, and Spock as much as anyone, and that was the only good thing about that film, but even that wasn't good enough to make me consider watching it ever again. I didn't realize ILM hadn't helped with this one. That explains a lot. I heard they had a much smaller budget, too. True?

Nah, i don't agree, it's a good chemical brothers album , especially if you followed them previously.

Last night it certainly wasn't 'B' territory but a 1954 film from Britain called An Inspector Calls with Alastair Sim. It was originally a stage play by Priestly and I must say I quite enjoyed it. Well done and a beautiful waltz melody from Francis Chagrin. Recommended

I tried to watch Battle: LA last night. What a load of rubbish! 2 hours of the military shooting at CGI aliens! I don't know what is more boring then seeing a dull gun fight never mind two hours of it! The special effects were pretty solid but Brian Tyler's score is a droning mess. It slowed the film down to a crawl. At one point my wife said and I quote "THIS SOUNDS LIKE PEARL HARBOR MUSIC!" I then asked... is that a good thing? She said and I quote "NO!" I love her even more now!

    THE GODFATHER

I've seen this dozens of times, I have it on DVD and yet I still had to watch it when it was on TV last night. If there's a flaw in this movie then I haven't seen it, brilliant direction, brilliant cast with a notable stand out and truly chilling turn from Al Pacino and Nino Rota's perfect score.

My all time top 10 films in no particular order...

    THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
    GODFATHER I & II ( sorry, I'm not seperating these )
    GOODFELLAS
    JAWS
    NIGHT OF THE DEMON
    UNFORGIVEN
    ICE COLD IN ALEX
    THE PIANIST
    ALIEN
    THE 49th PARALLEL

First off this list is a bit loose, there are probably some films I'm not thinking of so the list could change.
I notice that not one of the scores to these films ( discounting GOODFELLAS which uses songs to denote periods in time ) is in my top 20 and not one of them features a score by my favourite composer John Barry.

Anyone else want to try this for themselves?

I will when I get the chance. I would probably say that I have all my favourite films on DVD. And that the films I like most are linked to favourite music.

  7. I was in an electrical shop today - getting new headphones - and I tried out a bit of 3D TV.

Don't tell anyone but I was quite impressed. From what a guy said in the shop I got the suggestion that you can fine-tune the distance from the TV where the optimal spot for the 3D effect will be seen from. Is this correct?
