  1. I see the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still is on TV this weekend. The original is one of my favourites and any remake would not live up to that. But would watching the remake affect my enjoyment of the original?

Hmmmm? I've seen the remake and the original is one of my favourites too! To be honest Alan, I don't remember that much of the remake so I suppose that says it really. I watched the original recently and still love it as much as ever.

I'm sure watching it with young children brings a lot more joy to it. It just irritated me 100%

This was a very well done 'B' movie. I wanted to see it because MMM very recently put out the OST to it.

My all time top 10 films in no particular order...

    THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
    GODFATHER I & II ( sorry, I'm not seperating these )
    GOODFELLAS
    JAWS
    NIGHT OF THE DEMON
    UNFORGIVEN
    ICE COLD IN ALEX
    THE PIANIST
    ALIEN
    THE 49th PARALLEL

Seven of those would easily make it into my hastily assembled top ten.
  3. Really? One would be in mine I think

I tries to watch Battle: LA last night. What a load of rubbish! 2 hours of the military shooting at CGI aliens! I don't know what is more boring then seeing a dull gun fight never mind two hours of it! The special effects were pretty solid but Brian Tyler's score is a droning mess. It slowed the film down to a crawl. At one point my wife said and I quote "THIS SOUNDS LIKE PEARL HARBOR MUSIC!" I then asked... is that a good thing? She said and I quote "NO!" I love her even more now!

I'm hoping it will be better than Skyline,

It IS. A condom commercial is better thsn Skyline though.

My kids have never seen it. My wife and I rented it and enjoyed the hell out of it! I thought the animation was superb... both action set pieces - "Tai Lung Escapes" and "The Bridge" - were brilliantly executed. I was laughing my ass off from the start to finish (this coming from someone who despises Jack Black.) I thought it was a fun romp... and seeing animated stuff animals kicking the crap out of each other made it that much more enjoyable!

    David showed great judgement. beer

i find Rowan Atkinson hilarious, he has a bit of the Tommy Cooper's about him in that he only needs to make a face to make you laugh.

You'll love it, i am sure. I can't sit through it countless a times like some other esteemed dear member here, but nevertheless a very well-shot, entertaining movie with a heart and a great score (a bit overwhelming on cd but exceptionally great in the film).

  5. Watched Psycho late last night. Haven't seen it in a while and still as excellent as I remember. Needless to say, Herrmann's score is magnificent.

HTTYD the score became one of the best experiences in the film, making the film 10 times better and made me enjoy the score even more on CD.

It is filmmusic that makes the movie better, and vice versa

There is a book about this film that I've read which made me appreciate it even more. I've always appreciated the score more watching the film. As a stand alone listening experience I re-visit the L.A. Philharmonic/Salonen CD of Herrmann material.

  7. Watched Howard Goodall's 20th Century Greats this afternoon. It was about Bernard Herrmann and highlighted well how important the composer was to film music and 20th century contemporary classical music.

Especially when it's one of those good commercials, with product demonstration and such.
