    SHUTTER ISLAND

There's the big hollywood blockbusters we all are enjoying watching at the cinema whilst we devour the content of the huge popcorn bucket in front of us in nanoseconds, and there's the much rarer cases of true cinema. Scorsese is undeniably one of the latter's representatives. Shutter Island is the art of modern cinema and the narrative drama in its finest form, driven by incredibly effective pace, fine actors and direction / photography that pays a strong homage to Stanley Kubrick; the music Scorsese chose for the movie is absolutely captivating and its editing and usage throughout the movie is carefully crafted and prominent as it plays a great role in the overall story-telling. Shutter Island is a movie you must not skip, can't really recommend it enough.
Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders.

Good movie... but I could have used a better ending! I also got the Kubrick vibe from the film... especially that wide helicopter tracking shot of the prison ground at the beginning which reminded me of The Shining.

    spider-man 3

I think when you have to have 3 bad guys in a movie, it's obvious something is wrong. It's typical in modern blockbuster movies when the film makers don't know what they're doing, that they'll simply try to squeeze as much crap in as they possibly can, hoping to distract people from the fact that the movie has no substance. The first two movies had insanly good performances by veteran actors, Willem Dafoe and Alfred Molina, and being the single baddies their stories was given enough time to develop for the viewers to actually care about them. The 3 baddies here were played by unknown and uninteresting actors, their stories given little time to develop, and consequently they ended up being entirely forgetful.

Another problem, which I also struggled with in the other two movies is that Tobey Maguire can't do emotional scenes. Kirsten Dunst is a natural at those kinds of scenes, and the difference in talent made the emotional scenes even more jarring to me.

Rated it 4 out of 10 on imdb.

    In the mouth of madness

I love this movie. It's my second favourite Carpenter movie, after The thing. It has some creepy scenes that are very well made, I love the Lovecraft inspired monsters, and Sam Neill just makes the entire movie highly watchable.

Rated it 9 out of 10 on imdb.

    The Book of Eli

I was very curious about this movie when I had heard what it was about. I watched it at the weekend and I was not disappointed at all.
Sure, it you could spot many other movies (post-apocalyptic movies) in the story, the main storyline of the book made it unique. The visuals were stunning and Denzel had his charisma with him as always.
The twist at the end was really surprising, even though it made some scenes before a bit unbelievable.
I also loved that even it was a mainstream movie it handled faith with reverence, for a change.

  4. Martyrs

Man, I was ready to be shocked, but nothing prepared me for this. A very VERY disturbing movie that offers you unsettling gore and abuse. Until the end I was wondering where this movie would lead me because I couldn't understand how on earth it got passed the critics rating. I needed to see why this passed the rating. And then you receive the ending, and then you understand why. I think it is the only ending that justifies (inside the movie) the abuse you as viewer have to go through. Very difficult movie, but a very interesting and above all intriguing ending justified these means.

I heard from some friend who's seen it that it's absolutely disgusting and meaningless torture porn. He said 'don't watch it man, it's total crap, waste of time', knowing that i am never interested for such kind of movies. I find no reason to put myself through such stuff.

It's good that you have that strength. Sadly, (or thankfully, depends on how you see things), i find myself turning movies i find crappy halfway off so that i might salvage a little bit time of my life that would have gone to complete waste if i sat through it further. smile

I have seen a lot of movies, and I think there are no more than 20 movies I stopped before having seen the end. I think it comes down to that that I do know how an ending can change (for better or worse) a total impression of a film. If for instance the ending of The 6th Sense would have sucked, it would have destroyed 2 hours of exquisite filmmaking. So I guess I always want to see how it ends, because then a bad movie can sometimes makes utter sense. I think that is what Martyrs is all about

And in spite of all that you gave it a 7/10. That's interesting. I went to IMDB to check what it's about and oh... I see it stars Mylene Jampanoi. OK. I will watch it when I renew Netflix.

If I find a movie tough to finish (horror/gore) I split the watching into 2 or 3 parts during weekend daytime. spin

It's not because the movie was disturbing that I didn't like it, there are many movies that use gore to shock audiences, but here it shocks because it actually has a meaning. Until 2 minutes for the end you don't know why it happens, while for instance a Hostel you know exactly why

That's using a disturbing element and actually justifying it (for the story I mean)

But then you completely destroy the intentions by the one who made it. It's like watching 3 different movies, with the experience affected by your mood during the difference showings and a bunch of other things. Plus i forget things with a significant time interval between fragmented viewings, especially if we're talking about tough / disturbing movies that haven't won me over from the beginning.

Agreed in part. The experience is a bit fragmented and not what the director wants from the audience. But it's just one step better than stopping the movie entirely and not watching the remainder.

Exactly. The most shocking and terrifying movie I´ve ever watched. I watched it at the Sitges Film Festival in 2008 and everybody was shocked, speechless during the end credits. As usually the last few years, the french are the ones delivering the best horror movies (Martyrs, A l´Interieur, Frontiere(s), La Horde,....)
