NP : SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC - Ralph Vaughan Williams

A brilliant album conducted by Rumon Gamba. This is AWESOME music and utterly perfect for the view outside my window, the solo female soprano ( no, not Tony's wife ) just sent my spine into utter bone meltdown freezing

A frickin' awesome score let down by poor presentation. Anyone have a better track listing? (Anthony?)

I'll have a listen to this again later tonight, but from what I remember there's not nearly enough action/loud music to keep the pace going.

In the mean time check out a significantly improved Largo Winch playlist and my one for Hostage below.

Thanks. I've had your "version" of Largo Winch for some time now, and it is indeed an improvement on the original track order.

Have you got the two edited/extended tracks?

I've got everything that's on the normal Largo Winch album, so ney, I don't suppose I have. Should I?

    NP : L'AVION - Gabriel Yared

A beautiful score, at turns lyrically warm and embracing and darkly cold ( strangely it follows RVW's Antarctica very well ), I love Yared's music.

NP : PLATOON - Georges Delerue

Gorgeous score. In the film there was no need for Barber's Adagio, a piece that has been irrepairably damaged for me now by it's terminal overuse in the likes of war documentaries and even mocking spoofs, Stone should have stuck with Delerue's score which is obviously influenced by the temp track ( Barber's piece ), at least as far as I'm concerned anyway.

I far preferred the use of Barber's Adagio in David Lynch's The Elephant Man.

I never understood Oliver Stone's decision on this one especially considering the quality of the score that was written.

    I started with a C score today.

Celluloid Heroes by Nigel Westlake. He is an excellent composer that I would like to hear more from. There are many whimsical moments like in Babe or Miss Potter. This one has more dramatic moments and lots of brassy moments. Really good stuff man.

Then D for Defiance by James Newton Howard. A 4 stars score for me. Moody and lots of violin soli by Joshua Bell. I don't play this one very often but when I do, I'm always surprised how strong it is.

Now Playing E.T. by John Williams

The concert version one. For me, this is a superlative score from beginning to end - a top-notch 5 Stars calibre.

I'm going through this again now...but there's really a lot of long suspense segments that really aren't that interesting. I'm sure if you cut out a lot of those tracks it would be a much more pleasant listening experience but wouldn't tell much of an interesting "story", which is what all soundtracks should do!

Indeed, the man's music clearly has a lot of passion in it, and a grace for deep melody. Have you heard Amelia too, Tim?

Oh, you're in for such a ride! The score unleashes so much romantism and beauty right from the first phrase of the opening gem, you'll be instantly taken by it! Gem.

Williams does flying as the greatest action experience ever.
Yared emphasizes on the romantism of the whole thing.

I think Williams also goes for the romantic side, especially with his love theme from Superman. He captures the magic of flying brilliantly, especially with his music for Hook and 'Buckbeak's Flight' from Harry Potter.

I think when it comes to actiony flying music, Ron Goodwin is The Man. cool

Really? Then I suggest you listen to "Journey To The Island" from Jurassic Park, "The Flying Sequence" from Superman, "Buckbeak's Flight" from Prisoner of Azkaban and "Over The Moon" from E.T. Far removed from the action style scoring we are use to from Williams.

But the love theme from Superman doesn't focus on the flying of the whole thing, imo. But the magic of the thing is indeed in his ingredients too, i agree, as you pointed it out.

    x + Yared = Z
    z + desplat = x

    Z= sleep.

    if x = (z + Desplat)
and x = (Z - Yared), it logically follows that
    x = z + Desplat - Yared
As Z remains unknown, x is unquantifiable.

    Ah! Z has been qualified.
Therefore x = sleep with Desplat but not with Yared.

So who's the biggest Desplat fan on the forum? That will define our x!

All have their own individual voices when it comes to flying music ( I would definitely say that flying music rarely gets as joyously exhilarating as Ron Goodwin's ), and lets not forget Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry, both of whom have wings and can soar with the best of them.

It's a bit ironic when you call Yared's and Desplat's music boring whilst spending countless posts elevating Sherlock Holmes to the best thing ever levels my friend wink Just let people enjoy what they like and if you object, have VALID arguments instead of offending, ungrounded single-word adjectives.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah. I was just kidding man!

    I even heard Amelia.

When I dislike some score or some composer I say my arguments. How I did with Avatar.

About the score you mention about a british detective, I never said it's the greatest score ever. In fact, it's one of my less played scores of this year. But it's not bad, it's just not easy to listen.
  1. NP: Of Mice and Men - Aaron Copland

Listening to this recent Naxos download release only(?) (don't go into the merits of this type of release. I know that most people don't like - or want - this type of release and will avoid on principle forgoing the chance to hear the music).

    http://www.classicsonline.com/catalogue … pid=940620

I'm really enjoying this. It's coupled with his score to Our Town and I think that I prefer this latter score. I've heard some of Our Town as a suite on a Leonard Slatkin(?) CD but much prefer the individual tracks.

I'm wondering if this is going to be released on CD as the two scores combined come to a total of 83+ minutes: too long for a single CD?

Up next, Kritzerland's Empire of The Ants.
