NP How to Train your Dragon (John Powell)

Wow, this is big, loud, epic and, dare I say, over the top! May this one be his biggest effort so far? I mean in terms of how big the orchestra is (or seems to be). There´s not a single cue without a sense of epic in it, not even matched by his X Men 3 score. Love it!

I love the most intimate moments of this score.

So you love one minute of the score biggrin

NP: How to Train Your Dragon - John Powell

Very nice. The thematic material is excellent and memorable. The orchestral writing is grand, with a sense of fun and adventure. Very enjoyable score. Best animated score of this year, so far.

The 2 disc 'recording sesions' version is much, much better as listening experience. Much more coherent.

I never warmed up to this one... didn't get through the film either. I'm going to add the score to my Now Playing playlist and give it another go right after Powell's Dragon score.

    Brainstorm - James Horner

It was my first listen to this score and it has instantly joined the elite group of favourite Horner scores. I loved every single track. I love how Horner mixes the beautiful with the terrifying and he does it in a way that the music stays melodic throughout. A very strong album by Horner.

I've said this before, but the film is excellent when you watch the Director's Cuts version. It requires that you watch it, not just passively, but intently. The dialogue is just superb, with excellent characterization. It feels like a classic movie, not one of the time. My father-in-law, who isn't that fluent in English, found it quite engrossing.

Music wise, I think the score definitely one of Harry's best, if not the best score he's ever done. The complete 3disc version is so expansive though that I'm not even sure if it's worth it to recommend to anyone who didn't like at least parts of the official album.

I quite enjoyed the film - have only seen the director's cut - but it was very long! I thought it was a shame that Scott felt the need to put some other music in - for two reasons - (i) The 13th Warrior bit did rather overshadow the original music, working surprisingly well where it was used and it's such good music, which was a bit disappointing since it's probably HGW's best score and yet still played second fiddle to music which was written for another film; (ii) the placed music is so different from the original score, again it just draws attention to itself.

That's a darn fine CD Tom, it's a shame the Gwangi main title theme isn't included.

It's not his best. The action scoring is too over the top for me. But we have to remember is a 68 minutes realease, and it's almost a non stop action album.

But How to train a Dragon has a LOT of passion and beauty. And the main theme is another winner from powell.

Who can resist the main theme played with panpipes, flutes, electric guitars anb bells? Fucking cool!
