And your Sherlock Holmes/TDK example doesn't work because the language being used isn't the same and the style is different. SH has that Matchstick Men sensibility and TDK is its own thing, even if both has certain inflection built in to it, given that they're written by the same guy.
I understand your point about the electronics versus the full orchestra. My point is more the emotional language and coloring of the two scores as related to and influenced by the type of films they are written for. Sherlock Holmes and A-Team are action comedies, TDK and Beowulf are dark action dramas. That is why the comparison of their styles makes me uncomfortable. Besides that I agree with you.
NP: Afrika - Wataru Hokoyama
Very nice symphonic score. Thematic, melodic, eclectic, expansive, and, ultimately, grand old fashion orchestral work. I really enjoy this. -

Star Trek Deluxe Edition - Giacchino
My god I can't believe what is supposed to be an action score can be so boring because of its monothematic approach and lack of variety. I have a really hard time keeping my interest during its two hour run. The 45 minute album is a superb listen in comparison. The new Trek fans can get a copy because I won't."considering I've seen an enormous debate here about The Amazing Spider-Man and the ones who love it, and the ones who hate it, I feel myself obliged to say: TASTE DIFFERS, DEAL WITH IT" - Thomas G. -

The main theme is so much like Avatar it's scary. What's worse is that it WAS the least derivative theme from Avatar too!

Finished off Intrada's Mr. Atlas. Not bad. What hoping for better... but it's a sweet, emotional score with sweep and a theme that I'm pretty sure was inspired by Alfi Kabiljo's Sky Bandits.
Now onto...
NP: Outland - Jerry Goldsmith
Alien's long lost cousin. Lots of great suspense/atmosphere and one of Goldsmith most kick ass action cues... "Hot Water." This score was recorded by Eric Tomlinson which is a BIG bonus! Enjoying this one VERY much!

Can't wait for this one to arrive. (Though I'll need to order it first, which I've failed to do so far.) "Hot Water" is indeed fantastic. What's the unreleased stuff like? -

One of the main themes (The Opening Titles) is by Hans, there is one more by him (Hummel's Speech). The rest is by Nick, so they could have meant two different melodies.
Too much stuff was ever by Zimmer alone, especially these days.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

Kidding, right? Right?
I'm with you and Jordi, Beowulf is a great score.
BEOWULF had leitmotifs, had power, actual orchestrations and a generally kick-ass form. One of the last old-school hollywood scores we got the last few years. I love its direct and un-held power.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

NP: The A-Team - Alan Silvestri
It's a good listen, but very underwhelming in the end. The proto-typical Silvestri sound is all over this, which is nice to have once a year. The theme is nice, though he should have created one that could meld into and/or compliment the A-Team in some way. It is much, much better than GI Joe, though the erratic nature of some of the cues suggests that it's like a better built version of the GI Joe/Beowulf styling, and not of the classic Judge Dredd/Eraser model.
JUDGE DREDD ! You're fucking kidding, that score is M.A.R.V.E.L.L.O.U.S.
(I am not doubting what you said as i haven't heard the score yet (!
) but rather ranting in excitement 'cause if it's anywhere even remotely like JUDGE DREDD, one of the biggest kick-ass motherfuckers he has ever composed, then i am sold. Off to watch it in the cinema in an hour).Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

NP: Season of the Witch - Atli the Viking
I am not sure what everyone was complaining about when this came out, calling it incoherent noise and such. It's actually in the same vein as the rest of Atli's recent scores. Dark pulsing string work, long brooding (and sometimes heroic) chord progressions with a healthy amount of vocal work in the mix.
Of course, I am only 3 tracks in, so there may be more filler later, but that was true of Babylon A.D. too. It's
just not accurate to write this score off as having nothing of value! IMO of course.
I love the main themes from all the scores he's written, mostly the requiem choral stuff from BABYLON A.D. which is very, very good. The rest is just filler.
I suspect in 10 years we'll have 13 more scores from him so we could make one good album with all the 16-7 main themes he'd have written by then.Love Maintitles. It's full of Wanders. -

I'm not too familiar with the original album but usually scores containing a lot of suspense/atmosphere don't do much for me but Goldsmith always kept it interesting whether through his unique orchestrations or the inclusion of electronics. In Outland I love the electronic work. But as I said above I'd compare Outland with Alien.

Oh. I don't much like the action music in it, but fortunately there isn't much of that. I love the little Vaughan Williams lift in "Kung Fu Heaven". I know it's Horner stealing again, but I can forgive stealing something so good. -
